Who Authorized This Broadcast Without Me

I would like to know, specifically, who at the White House decided that MY television lineup was theirs to comment on, because I did not sign off on this, I was not consulted, and frankly I am still finding out about it secondhand like some kind of afterthought. The White House — an entire branch of the federal government, funded by ME, the taxpayer, the viewer, the person who has HBO Max AND a cable package out of pure spite — released a statement expressing "disapproval" that Rosie O'Donnell guest-hosted a special episode featuring Jimmy Kimmel. Disapproval. From the White House. About a guest-hosting arrangement. I want to be very clear about the scale of what just happened here, because I don't think people are grasping it: somewhere in the West Wing, someone with a badge and a title and presumably a desk looked at a late-night guest-host slot and thought, "yes, this deserves an official response," and NOBODY called me first.

This is not about Rosie O'Donnell. This is not about Jimmy Kimmel. I want that on the record immediately, in writing, notarized if possible, because the second I start talking about who was actually IN the chair, people lose the plot. This is about the fact that there is apparently a DESK somewhere in the federal government whose job includes issuing formal disapproval of a comedy booking, and that desk did not check with me, run it by me, or so much as leave a voicemail. I am the person who watches television. I am, arguably, the single most affected party in this entire arrangement, and the institution that is supposed to represent me decided to weigh in on my evening programming without a public comment period, without a town hall, without so much as a survey. Where is my survey? WHERE. IS. MY. SURVEY.

Let's talk about what "the White House" even means as an entity that has time for this. This is an office that is, theoretically, supposed to be occupied with — I don't know — things. Big things. Governing things. And instead, and I cannot stress this enough, someone in that building drafted, reviewed, approved, and RELEASED a statement about a guest-hosting gig. Do you understand the layers of bureaucracy that had to sign off on that sentence? Someone wrote a first draft. Someone else EDITED that draft. A press person had to stand at a podium, or type into a device, and put those words into the world, on my behalf, without my knowledge, as though I were some kind of passive citizen who just accepts whatever official opinions get handed to me about basic cable. I am not a passive citizen. I am a STAKEHOLDER. I did not delegate my opinion-having to a press office. That authority was never surrendered. I want it noted that I am reclaiming it, right now, retroactively, effective immediately.

And here's the part that really — I need everyone to sit with this — the mechanism by which I found out about a formal government position on a talk show booking was NOT a letter addressed to me. It was NOT a phone call. It was a NEWS ARTICLE. I had to learn, from a THIRD PARTY, that an institution I fund had taken an official stance on something happening in MY living room, on MY television, during MY evening. Do you know how that feels? It feels like coming home to find the locks changed and a note on the counter that says "we disapprove of your decor" and no explanation of who "we" is or when they were in your house. I want to speak to whoever is in charge of the policy that allows a press office to have opinions about guest hosts without a corresponding policy requiring them to ask ME first. There is a manager for this. There is ALWAYS a manager. I will find them. I will file the appropriate paperwork. I am documenting everything, and by everything I mean this specific grievance, which I am now writing down, publicly, for the historical record, so that no one can ever say I didn't see this coming, because I DID, I saw exactly this coming, the second institutions decided they get to have opinions about my evening entertainment without so much as a comment card.

People are going to say — and I can already hear them, I can already hear the exact tone of voice they're going to use — "it's just a statement, it doesn't affect anything." OH REALLY. Doesn't affect anything? It affects ME. It affects my sense that when I turn on a special episode of a program, I am doing so in a country where the highest office in the land has NOT yet issued a ruling on my remote control. That sense of security is GONE now. GONE. I used to be able to press a button on a device and simply watch television, unbothered, uncommented-upon, unreviewed by federal press staff. That innocence has been taken from me, and nobody is talking about the grief involved in that loss. There should be a hotline. There should be counseling available for people like me, who now have to wonder, every time they change the channel, whether somewhere a press briefing is being drafted about it.

And another thing — and I want to be fair here, I am always fair, I am famously fair — if the White House is now in the business of issuing disapproval about who hosts what on television, I expect CONSISTENCY. I expect a full, itemized, publicly available schedule of what else has been formally disapproved of, because if guest-hosting arrangements are now within scope, I have NOTES. I have SO many notes. I have been waiting my entire adult life for an institution with a podium to finally weigh in on programming decisions, and now that the precedent has been set, I fully intend to submit my own list of grievances for official review, and I expect the SAME turnaround time, and I expect it typed, and I expect it on letterhead, because if there's one thing I will not tolerate it's institutional inconsistency in the field of Having Opinions About My TV.

Somebody, somewhere, decided that my evening was a subject fit for federal commentary, and the sheer AUDACITY of doing that without a single email to me — not even a "hey, heads up, we're about to have thoughts about your Tuesday night" — is the kind of institutional overreach that keeps me up at night, staring at the ceiling, composing letters I will absolutely send. This is being escalated. I want that understood clearly. I don't know yet to WHOM it is being escalated, because apparently there is no higher office than the one that already weighed in, which is itself part of the problem, but rest assured, escalation IS occurring, in some form, possibly several forms, possibly a strongly worded letter and also a sternly worded voicemail, because I contain multitudes and so does my outrage.

I would like an apology. I would like it to be specific. I would like it to name the desk, the drafter, the approver, and the podium, and I would like it to acknowledge, explicitly, that a guest-hosting arrangement on a special episode of a program is not, actually, within the jurisdiction of federal press commentary, and that going forward, ANY institutional opinion about my television-watching experience will be routed through me first, in writing, with adequate notice, because I did not consent to this, I was not consulted, and someone, somewhere, is going to answer for it.

Someone will be hearing from me.

NOT TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT but our pot bellied pig General got loose again Tuesday during all this Kimmel noise and I SWEAR the timing is not a coincidence, he answers to two short whistles and a jar of peanut butter, if you see a low fast grey shape near the ballfield thats him, God bless whoever finds him.

Not to change the subject but heres my crockpot recipe for the potluck this weekend since somebody asked: 2 lbs stew meat, one bag frozen pearl onions, a jar of that orange marmalade nobody eats, low for 8 hours, trust me on this. Anyway the whole TV thing is fake outrage if you ask me, and nobody asked me, which is also fake outrage.

So my husband and I started a podcast, its called Two Guys One Shed, well its really just him and his brother in law but I do all the editing so I count as a guy too as far as Im concerned, and we were GOING to cover the whole Rosie thing this week but then the mic stand fell over during the intro and honestly that ate most of the episode because Gary swears the shed has bad wiring and I keep telling him its just the extension cord running to the chest freezer, we keep venison out there from Garys brother who hunts even though none of us have actually eaten venison since the freezer incident back in March, which is a whole separate story involving my sister in law and a generator, anyway the POINT I was making before I lost it is I dont think the White House should be grading television lineups when the county fair board cant even get the funnel cake permits sorted two years running, different topic I know but same energy if you think about it. anyway go find the shed podcast.

Actually if you read Article 9 of the Constitution it is the DUTY of the executive branch to comment on matters of broadcast decency, that has been law since Eisenhower signed the Cable Act in 1958. People forget the founders wrote in a whole clause about television because they were forward thinkers. So the White House was well within there rights to say something, I don't care what this column says.
