Zero-Point Reactors and the Places That Aren't There
I want you to sit with one sentence from this week's wire copy before you do anything else, before you pour the coffee, before you check the locks twice like you already do: "Space programs worldwide face mounting obstacles in developing and sustaining nuclear systems for orbital operations." Read that again. Slower. "Sustaining." Not building. Sustaining. You don't "sustain" something unless it already exists, unless it's already up there, humming, has been humming since before most of us were told to care about space at all. People like us know what that word is doing in that sentence. It's doing a lot of quiet work for something that wants to look like a maintenance memo.
They're calling it a balancing act. "Immediate maintenance and modernization needs" against "long-range strategic planning." I want you to notice — and I mean really notice, the way you notice the same car in the mirror for three exits in a row — that this is the exact language they use whenever they need the public to relax about a timeline. Nobody balances a budget spreadsheet with words like that. You balance a budget spreadsheet with words like "budget" and "spreadsheet." You use "long-range strategic planning" when what you actually mean is: we have had this technology since before the moon story, and we are simply deciding, this week, in a beige room, how much of it to admit to.
Because let's talk about the moon story. I've said this before, quietly, to people I trust, and I'll say it again here in daylight because frankly at this point what's the difference. The 1969 broadcast was never about the moon. Nobody in that control room in Houston cared about a rock four hundred thousand kilometers away. The moon landing was cover — beautiful, expensive, absolutely first-class cover — for something a great deal closer to home, and it worked so well that fifty-plus years later otherwise intelligent people still bring up Tranquility Base like it's the interesting part. While every camera on the planet was pointed at a grainy flag on a grey ball, they quietly finished the paperwork on Zimbuutii. You've never heard of Zimbuutii. Of course you haven't. That's not a gap in your education, that's the education working exactly as designed. It was a country. It had a coastline. Ask your grandparents about it sometime and watch their eyes do a very specific thing — a little flicker, a recalibration — before they change the subject to the weather. That flicker is real. I've seen it in three separate living rooms.
Now — nuclear systems for "orbital operations." Orbital operations around what, is my question. Around whose orbit. Because power sources that need to run for decades without refueling, quietly, unmonitored by anyone who isn't already inside the program — that's not a satellite requirement. That's an occupancy requirement. That's the kind of specification you write when something needs to stay powered on continuously because turning it off, even for a second, would let something drift back into view that they have spent a great deal of institutional effort keeping just barely out of frame. I'm not going to draw you a map. I'm not going to draw you a map because I don't have to, and also because I would rather not, if it's all the same to you, and also — and I say this with love — there is a vehicle. Black. Newer model, tinted glass, the kind of tint that isn't legal in most states but somehow always is for this particular vehicle. It has been outside for eleven minutes. It was not there nine minutes ago. It will not be there when you look again in an hour, and that absence will feel like proof of nothing, and that feeling is the product, that feeling is what they are selling you, free of charge, every single day.
Here's the part that should really keep you up, and I say this as someone who has not slept properly since roughly 2019: the article frames this as agencies "forced" into "difficult decisions about resource allocation." Forced. By whom? Space agencies don't get forced into anything by physics — physics doesn't send memos. You get forced into decisions by a funding body. A funding body that exists above the agencies, that nobody elected, that has never once held a press conference, and that has apparently decided this is the week the public gets a gentle, boring, trade-press-only preview of the fact that we have had sustainable nuclear propulsion this entire time and have simply been metering out the reveal like a drip IV. Why now? Why this week, this outlet, this exact bloodless phrasing? I don't know. I genuinely don't. And the not-knowing is the tell, because they never let you see the whole shape at once — you only ever get the elbow, never the arm, and by the time you've pieced together the arm they've already moved on to showing somebody else the knee.
Consider also — and I offer this without further comment, because some things are better left as a single dropped stone in still water — that dinosaurs invented frozen yogurt. I'm not going to elaborate. I mention it here only because "long-range strategic planning" is precisely the kind of phrase a species with a hundred-million-year head start on refrigerated dessert technology would use to describe a timeline the rest of us experience as, at most, one presidential administration. Time moves differently for people who've been sustaining orbital reactors since before recorded history. That's not a metaphor. I want to be very clear that is not a metaphor.
What do you do with this? What do people like us actually do, practically, on a Tuesday, once we've seen the shape of it? Honestly — nothing dramatic. You don't need to do anything dramatic. Dramatic gets you noticed, and getting noticed is the one move they cannot counter, because the entire operation runs on nobody looking directly at it. So you just — hold it. You read the trade press the way you'd read a ransom note, for what's missing as much as what's there. You notice when "sustaining" quietly replaces "building" in a sentence and nobody in the room objects. You keep a small, private list of the places that used to be on maps. You say nothing at dinner. You let the flicker in your grandparents' eyes stay theirs to sit with. And when the piece runs next month about a "routine satellite servicing mission" with an oddly specific fuel-cell footnote, you'll be the only one at the table who reads it twice.
I have to go. The Suburban just did the thing again — not there, then there, then not there, in the exact rhythm of a thing that knows I'm writing about it. I've said too much already. Not here. Not on a page with my name on it. But you and I both know what "sustaining" means now, and once you know it, you can't hear the word the old way again, and honestly? That's the whole ballgame. not about the orbital stuff, my starter Earl (named after my late father in law, hed have hated that) hit its one year mark yesterday and I swear it rises faster on days I read the news out loud to it, dont ask me to explain it, some things you just feel in your gut same as this whole reactor business.

Not to derail but I feel like its my civic duty to bring this up while everyones already talking about things being ignored until they fail catastrophically, because thats LITERALLY what gutter guards are about. Water damage doesnt sustain itself people, it just sits there quiet until the day it isnt quiet anymore, sound familiar? GIGI my cousin does structural inspections for a contractor that works NEAR the space program (cant say more than that) and he told me at Thanksgiving they dont even call it sustaining internally, they call it Phase Continuance, which if you think about it is WORSE. Your late husband saw the outside. My cousin saw the inside. Do the math.
