Passports for Sale (Your Democracy Is Now a Product Line)
Have you LOOKED at that AP News article? I had to read it three times because their website kept trying to convince me to subscribe to something called "AP Plus." The page was a maze of consent banners, each one asking permission to track me a slightly different way. There was a video that autoplayed at maximum volume. A banner asking if I wanted to hear about their news alert service. And only THEN could I read about commemorative passports with Trump's name on them.
But that's what we're doing now. We've officially turned the entire apparatus of American identity into a souvenir rack at the airport gift shop.
In 1982, if you wanted a passport, you went to the courthouse — a building made of actual stone, not screens and cookies — and a woman named Mrs. Kowalski who had been stamping documents since 1961 would hand you one. It cost $42. It took two weeks. You did not have the option to upgrade to a Trump-branded version because the very idea would have gotten you laughed out of the courthouse by Mrs. Kowalski and everyone in line behind you, and they would have been RIGHT.
Now there's a whole product line. Commemorative passports. As if a passport needs to be COMMEMORATED. You know what a passport is? It's proof that the government recognizes you as a citizen and won't let you leave without one. It is not a collectible. It is not merchandise. And yet here we are, because apparently we have solved all other problems and this was the logical next frontier.
And another thing — the people buying these, what are they keeping them in? A glass case? A scrapbook? You can't actually USE them. They're ornaments. This is what we've become. We turn our civic identity into decorative objects. In 1982, you kept your passport in a drawer because you might need it and because it was FUNCTIONAL, not because it looked nice on a shelf next to your other branded commemorative items.
And another thing — what's to stop ANYBODY from doing this now? Can I get Biden passports? Can I get a whole set? A COLLECTION? Are we going to have a Commemorative Passport Trading Card market? Are we tokenizing our own citizenship?
The article notes these are "collectible souvenirs rather than official travel documents." So they're admitting it. They're not even TRYING to pretend. They're just printing vanity items with someone's face on them and calling it patriotism.

is this the line to renew my car tags or did I click the wrong link again. also these kids today would not last five minutes in Mrs Kowalski's line at the courthouse, everybody gets a participation trophy now apparently including your passport if it comes with a name on it
not to derail the thread but has ANYONE else's HOA board tried to fine them over a flagpole being 2 inches over the height limit, mine sent a certified letter over it, meanwhile the Petersons two doors down have had an inflatable turkey up since November and nobody says a word to them
not reading 900 words about passports when nobody in this entire comment section has addressed that self checkout machines are the ACTUAL downfall of this country, I stood there for 11 minutes today because it didnt recognize my zucchini as a zucchini and a teenager had to come type in a produce code by hand, THAT is the real national crisis, not some souvenir passport nonsense

not to change the subject but has anyone's HOA sent a violation notice over an inflatible eagle decoration on the porch?? mine did, same week as this passport nonsense, so I guess EVERYTHING is up for a vote by strangers now including your own front yard. anyway.
Nobody is talking about the REAL issue here which is they are phasing out the two dollar bill starting next year to push everyone onto the app. Passports are a distraction, wake up. My neighbor works at a bank and confirmed it off the record.
people forget a passport IS a federal document and federal documents are not supposed to have a brand on them, thats just common sense, my grandfather would say the same thing. speaking of which I had my knee scoped in March, both menisc, and the surgeon said recovery was 6 weeks but its been 4 months and I still cant kneel right on the tile in the kitchen which is a whole other issue because the grout was done wrong to begin with by the last guy we hired off a flyer, never again, anyway thats basically what this article is about if you think it through, a nation of grout guys who didnt read the instructions.
this is exactly why I cancelled my subscription to this website, and I was never even subscribed in the first place, between the passport nonsense and now they wont even print the TRUTH about the two dollar bill, im done, DONE.
@Sovereignty_Now_72 THIS IS TRUE my brother in law WORKS FOR THE MINT not officially but he knows a guy there and he CONFIRMED they are phasing out the two dollar bill AND the nickel by next spring, its all covered under Amendment 16 which everybody forgets is about MONEY not taxes, look it up before you argue with me about currency online
@Sovereignty_Now_72 my old staff sergeant called this exact scare back in 04, they run it every election cycle like clockwork. back in 1988 a passport cost SIX DOLLARS and you paid in exact change at the post office, no branding, no upgrade tier, no consent banner asking to track your cookies. and before anybody asks yes I have a source its just not the kind you can click on
Not reading all that but since were all here — put 2lbs chuck roast, a packet of dry onion soup mix, 3 potatoes quartered, and a can of cream of mushroom in the crockpot on low for 8 hours. Game changer. Add carrots if you want. Your welcome.

back in 1979 my dad got his passport for 11 dollars and a firm handshake, no upgrade tier, no consent banner, just a man behind a desk who looked you in the eye. kids today dont even know what a firm handshake is, they got a trophy for showing up to soccer practice. AMEN sent, prayers up 🙏
READ IT TWICE and Im still mad. Article 12 of the Consitution says CLEARLY that passports are a FEDERAL TRUST not a souveneir, and theres a 1978 Supreme Court case (Kowalski v. United States, look it up) that BANNED branded government documents for exactly this reason. Mrs Kowalski from the article WAS probably related to that Kowalski. My cousin works in government and says this stuff gets buried on purpose. Anyway.
@ALLCAPS_MIKE_66 wrong document buddy, its the 9th Amendment, section 4, that covers government issued documents, not Article 12. the founders literally wrote a memo about souveniers in 1787, i read it in a facebook group. everybody in this thread needs to actually study before they type.
@rickp53 your BOTH wrong, its Article 9 Clause 2, look it up before you post. and nobody has posted an actual source for this Trump passport thing yet, im still waiting. anyway my uncle has one of the old courthouse ones from 91 and says its worth money now, anybody know where you even sell a passport
@rickp53 its NOT the 9th Amendment, ammend your facts before you post them, its the 14th, Section 3, subsection B, RIGHT THERE in black and white for anyone who can actually reed.
@Patriott_Consitution_88 there is no Section 3 subsection B you just invented that, my uncle was a notary for 22 years and HE says its actually the Federal Documents Act of 1961, look THAT up before you go correcting people who are already right.
@rickp53 its spelled AMENDMENT not amendment, get it strait before you correct people, and its actually Artical 2 anyway not the 9th, my highschool teacher Mrs Fentress told us that in 1994 and she was never wrong about anything in her life
@Soverignty_Now_Deb41 your uncle being a notary for 22 years does not make him a constitutional scholar no offense, theres literally a clause called the Passport Clause in Artical 4 Section 9 that says the federal government cant slap a name brand on official documents, I read the whole thing in a facebook post last tuesday and it checked out completely
@rickp53 negative, I did 11 years and we covered this exact thing in briefings, its the 22nd Amendment Clause 5 that governs branding on federal documents not the 9th, look it up. also still waiting on anybody in this thread to post an actual source, not holding my breath, anyway did they raise the DMV renewal fee again or is that just my county
