South Carolina Squires Ride Again to the Reeve's Second Tourney
Hear me now, for I have this day witnessed a marvel most confusing, and I set it down true as I am able, though God knows I have not the learning for it.
Word came down from the manor gate — nay, from the great glowing tapestry itself, the one that flickers with numbers and faces though no monk illuminates it — that the good folk of South Carolina had gathered to choose their champion, and that the choosing had not finished the choosing, if you take my meaning. Two squires of the same house, sworn to the same banner (a red one, though I could not make out the sigil upon it, some manner of elephant I am told, which strikes me as passing strange livestock for a lord to keep), stood forth from the field of contenders, and neither could claim the tourney outright. So it is to be a runoff, they say, which I take to mean they shall run it all off again, like the mud after a spring rain, and whoever is left standing in the muck shall be declared true champion and go on to face the rival house in the autumn meet.
Now I do not fully grasp this business of "primaries," but I am given to understand it works something like the trial by combat we hold at Michaelmas to settle who has right to the fallow strip behind the mill, save that instead of quarterstaves the combatants use — and here I confess my learning fails me entirely — small folded papers, which the freeholders mark with a stick of graphite and drop into a locked box, as though feeding grain to some iron beast that later belches forth a verdict. I watched a great long while for the box to open and show its workings and it never did. A sorcery kept modest, I suppose, as sorceries go.
The senior of the two squires, one Darline Graham, is said to have held her ground handily in the first bout, though not so handily as to end the matter outright, and so must ride again against the younger man, Ralph Norman, in this second tourney. I confess I know nothing of either combatant's prowess with lance or blade, for the tapestry showed me no jousting whatsoever — only men in dark garments of a curious cut standing before podiums, speaking gravely of "turnout" and "the base," which I took at first for agricultural matters, a discussion of soil and root vegetables, and settled in most contentedly to hear a good honest debate on crop rotation. I was disappointed on this count. Not one word was spoken of turnips the entire evening, which I confess left me somewhat adrift, as turnips are very nearly the only subject on which I hold firm opinions.
What I *can* report, and report faithfully, is the pageantry surrounding the contest, for that I understood better than the contest itself. There was a man near the edge of my vision — forgive me, near the edge of the great tapestry — selling what I can only describe as meat bound tight in a casing and laid upon a soft trencher of bread, dressed with a yellow humour I did not recognize and a green herb chopped fine. I watched this transaction with far greater attention than I gave the squires themselves, I confess it freely, for I have not eaten since terce and the meat-tube looked well charred and honest. A great crowd purchased these from his little wheeled stall, and none of them seemed troubled that no priest had blessed the meal, which in my village would occasion no small comment.
There was also a device — I have turned it over in my mind and I believe it must be some manner of familiar spirit bound to service, for it repeated numbers back at the standing men without any visible hand to move it, tallying how many freeholders had marked their papers thus far, as a reeve tallies sheaves at harvest, save this reeve is invisible and never sleeps and apparently works for no wage at all, which if true I should very much like to speak with his lord about employment terms for myself.
At one point the whole tapestry itself seemed to convulse and repeat a moment already passed — a man's mouth moving the same words twice, his hand lifting the same paper twice — and no one in the hall so much as flinched at this plain and unmistakable witchcraft, time folding back upon itself before their very eyes, which tells me either that such magics are commonplace here and beneath comment, or that the whole company has been bewitched into blindness regarding it, and I know not which prospect unsettles me more.
I am told — and I set this down only because I was told it with such great confidence by the men at the podiums, who wore the bearing of men who know their business — that this Senate seat, once filled, entitles its holder to sit in a hall in a distant capital and vote upon matters of the whole realm, much as our own lord sits at the shire moot and votes on whether the common land shall be enclosed this Michaelmas. I do not know if South Carolina is a shire or a whole kingdom unto itself. The tapestry did not say, and I did not think it my place to ask the meat-tube vendor, who seemed a busy man and disinclined toward conversation on matters of governance.
The runoff itself, they say, shall not be run for some weeks yet, which puzzles me most of all — for what manner of tourney is called and then not held for a full season's turning? In my village if the quarterstaff match is called for Sunday it is fought on Sunday, win or lose, rain or shine, reeve willing or no. But I am given to understand these things move on their own slow calendar here, like the assizes, and a man must simply wait upon it, as we wait upon the wheat.
I confess also that I do not know which squire I ought to favor, having seen neither wield anything sharper than a rhetorical point, and having no stake myself in the outcome, being as I am a stranger to this realm entirely and like as not to wake back in my own field by morning with mud on my knees and no memory of any of this at all. But I wish them both fair contest and an honest count, and I wish the meat-tube vendor continued good custom, for he alone among the whole spectacle seemed to be doing an honest day's labor for an honest day's coin, same as any man ought.
The light is going now and I hear the beast-that-grooms-the-frozen-field lowing somewhere off in its pen, though there was no ice here that I could find, only carpet, and I must away before the reeve marks me idle. God keep the both of them, and God keep South Carolina, wherever it may lie.

MY COUSIN WORKS SOMEWHERE ADJACENT TO GOVERNMENT and she says both houses pull this exact stunt every single cycle, so honestly yall arguing about elephants and article numbers are BOTH wrong and im apparently the only reasonable person left on this entire thread
not touching the squire mess but can we PLEASE just acknowledge birds arent real, they never have been, its been settled for years now and yall are still out here acting shocked every time one lands on your porch. do your own research for once
the REAL issue nobody is bringing up is why a reeve needs a SECOND tourney at all, my kids little league only needs the one and nobody's manor gate had to get involved
this right here is exactly why I let my subscription lapse, never had one to begin with but the principle stands, a website that cant explain a simple runoff in one clear paragraph doesnt deserve my eyeballs OR my nonexistent seven dollars a month
im trying to follow this squire business but our internet has been in and out since the storm monday and it makes it hard to keep up, my son in law says the storm was caused by cloud seeding which sure, maybe, i dont know enough to say one way or the other, anyway my sister in cordoba said the same storm hit them too, small world, i started the sunlight only cleanse tuesday and havent eaten anything since so my thinking might not be as sharp as usual today, still not sure who the elephant house even is or if the tourney has anything to do with the actual olympics, but day three of no food and i feel like i could win a tourney myself honestly

not gonna weigh in on the squires, none of my business, but I started eating only beige colored foods two weeks ago on my grandsons advice, mashed taters, bread, little bit of chicken, and I havent felt this good in twenty years. anyway hope the tourney works out for everybody. God bless
@PapawBill_of_9 beige foods is fine and all but back in 1962 a whole tourney entry fee was thirty five cents and a chicken you didnt even like, nobody needed a runoff, the reeve just pointed at whoever was still standing in the muck and that was that, this generation ruined a perfectly good tourney

unrelated to the squires but my neighbor put up an inflatable eagle the size of a Buick and the HOA sent him a letter and now hes suing them, meanwhile my kid brought home a trophy for LOSING his soccer game, nobody left in this country has any standards, my old drill sergeant would have a stroke if he saw either one of those things

My late husband's football coach back in 1961, Coach Verlin Huff, God rest him, used to say the scoreboard doesnt care how tired you are and I think about that phrase almost every single day of my life, not just for sports but for everything, groceries, church, family, all of it.
Anyway I was reminded of Coach Huff reading this because it says something about a runoff and Coach Huff always said extra innings build character which I know is a different sport but the spirit is the same to me if you think about it long enough.

before yall lose your minds in the replies maybe just do your own research on how runoffs actually work instead of fighting about a county population, its not that complicated, my uncle ran unopposed for water board twice and even he understood it
off topic but has anyone seen a goose around the county fairgrounds, answers to whistling, very intelligent, knows when the mail truck comes before the mailman does, my nephew was supposed to be watching him during the tourney coverage and got distracted, if you see him do not chase him he does not like that, whistle instead
im not political but if we let one house run TWO squires against each other then the whole tourney is rigged from the jump, everybody knows this, my kids participation trophy from soccer didnt even have a real winner on it either so i see where this is headed, its the same soft thinking
ok so the runoff thing reminds me actually of my HOA because we also had two candidates for the board that were basically the same guy and it split the vote, except our situation is worse because one of them put up a inflatable eagle for the 4th of july that is STILL up, its August, and when i mentioned it at the meeting he said it was a year round patriotic display which is not in the bylaws anywhere i have checked twice. anyway the mailbox committee is a whole separate mess dont get me started on that, my neighbor painted hers a color that is not on the approved list and claims the paint store discontinued the approved one which i have not been able to verify and frankly at this point i dont think birds are even real so how would i trust a paint store either, everything is a drone, thats a different topic though. point is nobody in charge of anything finishes the job anymore, not the HOA not South Carolina not my sourdough starter half the time

reading this article made me think about my knee surgery which is funny because they have nothing to do with each other but stick with me. so the doc says its a routine scope, in and out, and I says doc my old coach useta tell us pain is just weakness leaving the body and the doc just looks at me. anyway three weeks of physical therapy and the guy doing it, younger fella, kept talking about his fantasy football which I dont follow, I follow real football, the kind with the actual squires and reeves like this article, wait no that's not real that's the old times, I get confused sometimes since the surgery, the anesthesia does something to you they dont tell you about. where was I going with this. my coach also useta say something about runoffs in track, run it back, run it again, and I think about that every time I see the news now, everything's a runoff, my knee is basically a runoff too they had to go back in twice. anyway good luck to the elephant house or whoever, hope your primary goes better than my recovery did

unrelated to squires and reeves but my sourdough starter Gerald (named after my uncle Gerald, rip) turned three shades darker overnight and I don't know if that's normal or if he's trying to tell me something about this runoff. anyway happy to take advice. also they NEED to bring back the discontinued onion rings from that one chain, a national tragedy nobody talks about
this is exactly why I cancelled my subscription to this site. never subscribed in the first place but the PRINCIPLE stands. a runoff for the SAME house makes no sense, either you won the tourney or you didnt, quit changing the rules mid muck

I'm not political but if two squires from the same house can both run then next thing you know my own grandkids will be running against each other for who gets the good cookie plate at Thanksgiving and I for one will not stand for that kind of chaos in this country. screenshotting this whole comment section just in case, not saying why, just know that I did it. @FreedomWagon_66 did two tours and I can tell you the Constitution is real clear on this, Article 12, a house cant run two squires against itself in the same tourney, thats the whole reason the Reeve system exists in the first place, my old CO drilled that into us. also is this the line for renewing car tags or did I take a wrong turn somewhere
