Von Miller's Great Pilgrimage, and the Iron Star He Now Wears

By my troth, I have seen a great binding-over today, and though I do not have the learning to say what was bound to what, I set it down true, as is my labor.

The criers of this land — for they have criers here, though they do not stand in the square and shout, but speak instead from a box with a face in it, a marvel I will not attempt to explain twice in one dispatch — did proclaim that a mighty champion named Von Miller has forsworn his old lord, one called Denver, of the Broncos, and sworn fealty instead to a new and glittering house: the Dallas Cowboys. And he himself did say, and I have this from the criers direct, that it is "a dream within a dream." Which is a fine thing for a man to say of his own life, and I do not doubt him, though I confess I have had that same dream myself of a night, usually after bad cheese, and it did not end so well as his appears to be ending.

Now I must tell you plain: I do not know what a Cowboy is in this contest, save that it cannot mean what it means in my own country, where a cow-boy is a lad of nine set to keep the beasts from the turnip field with a stick and a great deal of shouting. I saw no cattle. I saw no turnip field. I saw instead a vast bowl of a place, bigger than any manor I have known, ringed about with more souls than attended the whole of the Michaelmas fair in the good years before the pox thinned us, and every one of them roaring as one throat. I asked the man beside me — a kindly stranger who did not understand my speech but was patient with me regardless, as one is patient with a man who has plainly wandered in from somewhere very far off, which by my reckoning I have — what manner of beast the Cowboys herded, and he laughed and gave me a meat-tube in a little bread trough and told me to watch the field. I have not yet worked out if the meat-tube was payment, sacrament, or simple charity, but I ate it, for I was hungry, and it was very good, and I have decided it is the finest thing this age has yet shown me, better even than the great glowing tapestry that hung above the whole affair displaying numbers no man could account for.

Of the man Von Miller himself I saw little, and here is where my report must be thin, for which I ask pardon. I am told he plays a position most fierce — I believe the word given me was that he "gets after the quarterback," which I took at first to mean a kind of tithe-collector, a man sent round to harry some lesser official until he coughs up what he owes the crown, and I confess I still half believe this, for I saw men in similar dress running very hard at one fellow in particular as though he had shorted them a bushel of wheat. If that is not what a quarterback is, I am sorry, for it is a fine enough guess and I intend to keep it.

He was, they say, a Bronco before, and is a Cowboy now, and I understand this the way I understand a man leaving one manor's service for another's — a better lord, better land, a hall with a bigger fire — save that here there is no lord at all that I could find, only a great deal of shouting and a document, which I am told is called a "contract," a word I know well enough from my own dealings with the miller, who is a cheat, though I do not say the Cowboys are cheats, having no evidence of it, only having learned young to distrust any man who asks you to put your name to a paper. Von Miller signed his gladly, by all report, and wept, or near did, which I understood better than anything else all day, for a man leaving one service for another, even a grander one, always weeps a little at the gate, whatever face he shows the crowd.

I will tell you what I understood best, and it was not the game. It was the beast. There came out onto the field, at some pause in the proceedings whose purpose I could not divine, a great painted ox, walking upright on its hind legs as no ox of my acquaintance has ever managed, and it danced, and threw small soft stones into the crowd, and the crowd caught them and were glad. I watched this ox for a very long while. I do not know its office. It tended no plow, herded no beast, ground no corn. It simply danced, magnificently, and asked nothing of anyone, and I confess that of all the sorceries I witnessed in that great bowl — the tapestry of light, the abacus worked by unseen hands that ticked the numbers ever upward, the moment near the end when the players on the glowing tapestry all seemed to run backward at once, which I take to be some working of time itself turned against its own current, a thing no priest of my village would sanction and yet no one round me so much as blinked — of all these, it is the dancing ox I understood most completely and loved most well. A creature that exists only to be joyful in front of a crowd. We had nothing like it at home. We should have.

Von Miller, they tell me, has now what he calls his dream. I hope the house he has entered feeds him well and does not work him past what a man of his years should bear, for I gather he has given long service already to his old lord and this is by rights a kind of retirement into finer pasture, though a fierce one — I am told the Cowboys are accounted a great house indeed, storied and much watched, the sort of hall a wandering man hears sung of even from very far away, even, I daresay, from a hedgerow in the old country, though I confess I had not heard the song myself until this very day, on account of the hedgerow being some five hundred years and an ocean off, more or less, by my poor reckoning of these things.

I did not see who won. I am ashamed to say it but I did not think to ask, being occupied with the ox, and then with a second meat-tube, and then with the great procession of carts that left the bowl afterward all in a line with their own small suns burning at the front of each one, which I took for a fleet of will-o'-the-wisps tamed to harness and am not eager to be corrected on, as it is a comforting thought and I have had few of those today.

The light is going now, or would be, if I could find where the sun keeps itself in this loud country, and there is a field somewhere waiting on me still, though I could not tell you which one, or how far, or whether it is even still there. I must away regardless. That is the work, and I do it faithfully, whether or not I understand a word of what I have seen.

God keep the ox, and God keep the man who now wears the Cowboys' star, wherever a star may sit upon a shoulder such as his.

Not about the article but I keep meaning to say this to somebody, that tornado siren by the water tower has been going off at funny little half-second bursts all week and my grandbabies say it's nothing but I know what I hear, it's doing something to how the whole street's been thinking. Also sending this along, a chain blessing my sister mailed me years back, good fortune comes to whoever replies Amen below, God bless this whole silly thread.

Not about the article but reading this reminded me of my old high school coach, Coach Duvall, who used to say 'a man that changes teams still has to look at himself in the mirror' and honestly that mans wisdom shaped me more than any of my actual schooling did. God bless Coach Duvall wherever he is.

This whole Von Miller switching teams thing is just a grown up participation trophy if you ask me, back in my day you picked a team and you STAYED, nobody handed you a shiny new jersey for changing your mind. Also is this the site where I renew my car tags or is that somewhere else.

Now I don't post much but I raised nine kids and I'll say this once: both the Broncos folks and the Cowboys folks in this thread are half right and half wrong, and I seem to be the only one here willing to say so. My son-in-law works for the state athletic commission, can't say which state, and he told me privately this whole 'dream within a dream' business gets settled in a room nobody in this comment section will ever see. God bless, and maybe pray on it before you reply to me.

Not about the article but has anybody else noticed the tornado siren by the water tower going off at weird times lately, not for storms, just going off for no reason, and every time it does my thoughts go fuzzy for about ten minutes after. My wife says I am imagining it. I know what I felt. Somebody is testing something on this town and it is not weather related.

Read this twice with my coffee and the part about the box with a face in it hit different this morning because our tornado siren went off at 6am for NO storm that I could see, and ever since then my thoughts have felt sped up, exactly like the criers describe, and I am not the only one on this road who noticed it, ask anybody.

Anyway the cow-boy of nine thing, I don't know, my grandaddy kept his own turnips safe without a badge or a title so maybe that's the real lesson here, also has anyone seen a grey goose that answers to whistling, ours got loose and I started writing this comment about the siren and forgot to even say that part first, anyway God bless and watch the skies.

Anyway my knees have been bad since 04 and I started using a copper compression sleeve, changed my whole life, also my sister in law does the leggings thing, wholesale, ask me about the starter kit if anybody wants in before end of month. Reading this one slow with my coffee this morning and it put me in mind of my old football coach, Coach Withers, God rest him, who used to say a man can only run in the direction his feet are pointed, which I did not understand at the time and I am not sure I understand it now but I think about it every single day of my life.

Anyway I don't know much about the Cowboys or the Broncos, my grandson tries to explain the standings to me every Thanksgiving and it never sticks, but I do know that when a man says a thing is a dream within a dream you ought to just let him have it and not go picking it apart the way some of you are doing in this thread.

Also if anybody's furnace filter needs changing before it gets cold, do it now, don't wait, that's just good advice from an old man. God bless.

Everybody in this thread needs to do there own research before typing another word. This whole Von Miller situation traces straight back to the 1990s when free agency got out of hand and nobody wanted to stay loyal to anything anymore, not a team not a marriage not nothing. My old coach used to say loyalty is a muscle and if you dont use it it goes soft, and I think about that every time I see a jersey swap on the criers box. Also self checkout machines are part of this same problem if you really think it through, nobody wants to do the work themselves anymore, they want a machine or a new team to do it for them.

@Soverignty_Now_44 yall are ALL skipping over the actual founding text here. Under the Turnip Accord Ratification of 1791, Section 4, it is LOYALTY first because a turnip cannot legally consent to being guarded without a sworn oath, thats CONTRACT LAW, my brother in law is a notary and he confirmed this for me over the phone last night. FREEDOM comes second because freedom without loyalty is just chaos with a flag on it, ask any of the founders, they would tell you the same. TURNIPS last because the vegetable itself has no rights, only the guarding of it does, thats basic jurisprudence.

HONOR. HERITAGE. TURNIPS. Thats the whole argument right there and I dont know why this thread needs 40 more comments to say it. Some of yall type paragraphs and still miss the point, its not complicated, some of us just SEE it.

@Sgt_Fenceline_09 say what you want about Amendment 19 but I watched this exact thing happen to my neighbor's kid two summers ago, tried out to keep the turnips off the county road, swore some kind of oath to the wrong farm by accident, and by fall the whole family had to move counties. Thats not a coincidence thats a PATTERN and its happening in every single state right now, look it up, nobody in the criers box will report on it because it dont fit the story they want to tell.

@Soverignty_Now_44 yall keep arguing without sourcing it. Section 14 of the Turnip Compact of 1791, ratified by nine of the eleven colonies present that year, states plain as day the order is TURNIPS first, because no cow-boy can swear loyalty to a lord he has not yet fed. I did not make this up, it is in the text, look it up before you reply to me again.

@Sgt_Fenceline_09 this is literally the plot of that one episode where the guy switches teams and everybody screams betrayal and then two weeks later they are all fine and going to his barbecue. Doesnt matter what Amendment 19 says, Hollywood already settled this argument years ago and none of yall want to admit a TV writer figured out human nature better than the Turnip Accord did.

Gonna be honest I have not actually read past the headline on this one, work has been a lot lately, but I still feel strongly that the whole thing is a mess and somebody dropped the ball. My uncle was in the service with a guy who knew a guy that worked adjacent to a team facility one summer and he always said loyalty in that business is a one way street. Anyway that reminds me, my truck has been making a clicking noise since Tuesday and I still havent taken it in, and my daughter has a recital Thursday so who even has time, point is I stand by what I said even though I am not fully sure what I said it about anymore. FREEDOM. Something like that.

Show me the actual source on this Turnip Accord because I looked and could not find page 1 of it anywhere, not that it matters because back in 1962 this whole turnip business cost you a nickel and everybody minded there own beeswax, THATS the amendment yall keep skipping.

@Sgt_Fenceline_09 yall keep citing 19 like its gospel but Amendment 31 of the Turnip Accord, Second Ratification, is what actually governs interstate cow-boy transfers, Supreme Court settled that in the Hedgerow case, look it up.

@Sovereignty_Forge1776 THERE IS NO AMENDMENT 31 THE TURNIP ACCORD ONLY HAS 22 AMENDMENTS AND I WOULD KNOW BECAUSE MY GRANDFATHER SIGNED A COPY OF IT. Stop making up case names, "Hedgerow" isnt even a real county.
