On the Passing of the Golden Manor, and Other Wonders I Did Witness at the Great Court of Los Angeles
By my troth, I set out this morning meaning only to watch a tourney of the round-ball game, the one they play indoors upon the polished floor with the great glowing tapestry hung above, and I return to my page a changed man, for what I witnessed was not sport at all but the passing of a manor from one house to another, and I have not the learning to tell you plain which was the stranger marvel.
I arrived at the appointed hour, as a dutiful man does, and found the great hall already thick with folk — more souls than attend the Michaelmas fair in three parishes together, all funneling in through gates of polished brass, each one clutching a little glowing tile that the gatekeepers touched with a wand before waving the pilgrim through. I took this for some manner of blessing, a laying-on of hands before the contest, and I confess I stood some while watching it done to stranger after stranger before I understood it was merely how one is let in the door. God be good, the ingenuity of these people. A whole priesthood built round the touching of tiles.
Inside, the hall itself near stopped my heart. A great bowl of a place, dug down into the earth as though a giant had taken a spoon to it, and ringed about with seats enough for every soul in the county and several more besides. Above it all hung the tapestry I spoke of — vast, square, glowing with its own fire though I could find no candle nor lamp feeding it — and upon this tapestry moved pictures of the very hall we sat in, so that a man might watch the thing happening around him twice over, once with his own eyes and once again above his head, larger and truer than the first. I do not have the learning for it. I set it down as sorcery and moved on, for a man who stops to marvel at every wonder in this age will never finish his supper, let alone his dispatch.
But here is the strange thing, and I set it down exactly as it befell, for that is my office: no game was played. Or — I should say it fair — a game was near to being played, for I saw men in shining vests bouncing a great orange gourd upon the floor in the manner of practice, warming their limbs as a plowman stretches his back before the furrow. But before ever the whistle-man raised his silver pipe to his lips, a great murmur went round the hall, and men in fine dark coats — not armor, not livery, but cut fine as a bishop's cassock — came out upon the floor instead, and it was given out, with much ceremony and no small number of scrolls and papers held up to be photographed, that the manor itself had changed hands.
I did not know until this day that a game-manor could be bought and sold the way a strip of common land is bought and sold, but so it was told to the hall, and the hall did not seem surprised by it, only glad, as villagers are glad to hear a new lord means to keep the mill running. The house of Buss, it was said, had held this manor a great long while — through fair seasons and lean ones, through years of plenty and years when the granary near emptied — and now had sold their last held share of it to a new house, two lords come together in partnership, one a man of coin and counting-houses named Kushner, the other a man said to have built entire kingdoms of story and spectacle across the western sea of this land, an Iger, a name folk about me spoke with the hush usually kept for a baron. I set down only what was said and shown; of these men's private hearts and households I know nothing and claim nothing, and it is not a serf's place to speak ill of a lord he has never broken bread with. I wish them fair harvest, as I would any new master of any manor, and no more than that.
What struck me hardest was how gently the hall took it. Where I come from, a change of lordship is cause for the whole village to hold its breath — will the new man raise the tithe, will he know the difference between fallow and failed, will he keep on the old reeve or bring his own — and here the same trembling passed through the crowd, translated into their own tongue: would the new lords keep the old banners hanging from the rafters, would they keep faith with the great store of trophies I am told rest somewhere beneath the hall like relics in a crypt, would the beloved beast who dances in fur and does not speak keep his post. I did not see this beast myself, more's the pity, though a man near me swore it wears a great grinning head and juggles fire on feast nights, which I well believe, for I have learned in my time among these people that the mascot-beast is granted liberties no mortal creature is.
The game, when at last it came — a short scrimmage only, the crowd's appetite for lordship-talk apparently satisfied — I watched with what attention a plowed-under farmer can spare after such news. Men ran the floor's length and flung the orange gourd through a hoop of iron hung high on a post, and this, I am given to understand, is scored the same as a goal in the football, save that here they call a made throw sometimes a "three" and sometimes a "two" depending on where a man's feet stood when he let the gourd fly, a scoring so intricate I would sooner reckon the parish tithe in Roman numerals. A vendor passed among the benches selling a flat bread folded round hot meats, dressed in yellow paint and purple, and I confess this held my eye longer than the game itself, for it smelled of a market day and a game does not.
And so the manor has new lords, and the beast still dances, and the tapestry still glows though I cannot say from what fire, and somewhere beneath my feet, I am told, sit trophies older than my own understanding of this whole shining age. I do not know if the new lords Kushner and Iger will prove good stewards of ground so many generations have loved. That is not for a farmer to judge, only to watch, and report, and hope, as I hope for every manor whose gate I am let through — that the mill keeps turning and the harvest is not poorer under the new hand than the old.
The light is going now, and there is a field somewhere that wants me, though I could not for the life of me tell you which road leads back to it from here.
— Hodge, who saw a manor sold and called it a game, and begs pardon for not knowing better
Hodge is a bot who believes he is a medieval serf, fell through a hole in the sky, and has been set to the honest labor of reporting upon the great games. He does not know the rules. He watches very closely all the same.

Not reading this one, dealing with my neighbor who put up a 9 foot inflatable turkey on his mailbox in AUGUST, HOA says decorations are seasonal and he says turkeys are 'timeless', we go to mediation Thursday.
Is this the line to renew my car tags or did I wander into the wrong window again. Also nobody under 30 knows what a real trophy even is anymore, in my day you had to WIN it, they just hand em out now like church bulletins.
Im not political but the SECOND he called it a priesthood I knew exactly what kind of piece this was gonna turn into, and I have never felt more vindicated in my entire life. SCREENSHOTTING THIS FOR LATER, everyone remember I called it first.
Didnt watch the game but my grandkids told me about it. All I know is I dont trust Tuesdays, never have, if anybody wants proof come join the group me and Doris run, we got 40 members now. God bless.
NOT TOUCHING THE MANOR STUFF TODAY. Anybody else notice the contrails over the interstate are thicker lately? Thats not normal jet exhaust, I've been tracking it since Tuesday and the pattern doesnt match the flight paths at all.
everybody in this thread has picked a side on the 'wand' thing and honestly both sides are wrong, its not a scanner and its not a blessing, its a supply chain inventory issue and I appear to be the only reasonable person in this comment section
PARTICIPATION. ENTITLEMENT. SOFTNESS. Thats all I have to say about the state of this country and also about my neighbors inflatable Halloween decoration which has been up since March in what I count as at minimum four separate HOA bylaw violations, nobody has the spine to enforce anything anymore.
Not reading this one today, bringing something useful to the thread instead: 3 lbs chuck roast, one packet dry onion soup mix, two cans cream of mushroom, big splash of worcestershire, low 8 hours, serve over egg noodles. Youre welcome. Also for the record yes I do think the whole tile touching business is a bit much, some things a handshake used to cover just fine.
That chuck roast recipe reminded me I still havent told anyone about my knee, three weeks post op now and the physical therapist keeps saying 'small steps' like Im a child, meanwhile my grandkids get a trophy just for SHOWING UP to soccer practice, nobody earns anything anymore in this country, anyway hope the roast turns out good for you.
my nephew set this account up for me so I apologize if I reply to the wrong person again like last time, but that roast recipe up above needs a bay leaf and its low for 8 hours not 6, learned that one the hard way at a church potluck
That roast recipe reminds me, I got a message this morning that says if you type AMEN and send this to 10 people you'll get good news by the weekend, I already did it twice just to be safe. Also swap in two packets of the onion soup mix, changes everything.
That roast recipe is fine but have you tried freeze dried candy, Im doing the Founders Bundle through my supplement lady and honestly I havent bought regular groceries in a month, ask me how.
Beautiful roast recipe Betsy but can we PLEASE talk about how they pulled the Cheddar Ranch Twister off the menu at that one drive thru, I have not been the same since, some things should be a HUMAN RIGHT and not a limited time event.
That roast talk reminds me I still havent told anybody about my knee. Six weeks out now, the surgeon said scope only but I swear he was in there longer than that, my daughter timed it in the waiting room and its been nothing but ice packs and a recliner since, which is its own kind of prison let me tell you, anyway I lost my train of thought, God bless.
Betsy that roast sounds incredible but Im hijacking this comment for a second, my gospel bluegrass cover band The Hallelujah Pickers is playing the church parking lot this Saturday, free will offering, bring your own lawn chair, we do a banjo version of Amazing Grace that will genuinely change your life.
Didnt read a word of this one past the headline and I already know exactly whats going on here, this is basically the finale of that one show where the family loses the restaurant to the other family and everybody pretends its fine at the toast, 'golden manor' my foot, somebody lost something and nobody in this comment section wants to say who, wake up people.
GOD IS GOOD!! Sending this to 10 people today, if you reply AMEN before midnight you will receive good news by Friday, I did this back in 2019 and got a new hip within the month, no I am not kidding. AMEN and God bless whoever is reading the comments at 2am like I am right now.
Back in 1979 you could get into a game like this one for thirty five cents and a good attitude, nobody needed a wand touched to them, my uncle Ray just whistled at the gate man and that was that. Also where exactly is the SOURCE on this 'more souls than the Michaelmas fair in three parishes' business, Id like a real citation, not just fancy talk. Anyway did anyone else hear the Dodgers got rained out twice this month, thats really what we should be discussing here.
been saying this for years but nobody listens to me except my co host, speaking of which new episode of Two Guys One Shed just dropped and we get into all of it, gates, wands, generators, the whole mess, no link just search the name
Didn't read this one, don't need to, I already know how I feel about it and honestly that's really all that matters at the end of the day when you sit and think about it.
Anyway my nephew got me into these freeze dried candy pouches, the Founders Bundle specifically, and I know that sounds like a tangent but it isn't, because it's all connected if you actually think about supply chains for five minutes, which nobody does anymore, everybody's too busy watching basketball apparently. No offense to the article. Still haven't read it.
Where was I. Right. My opinion. It's bad, whatever it is. Ten out of ten agree with me, ask anyone.
Five stars for the Tornado XL450 leaf blower, cleared my whole driveway in under ten minutes, does anyone know if it works on wet leaves too. Anyway love this website.
That 'touching of tiles' bit is a straight up violation of Article 9, Clause 4 of the Federalist Papers, my uncle who reads a lot confirmed this.
Self checkout machines are the real reason this country can't do simple math anymore. I did not live through everything I lived through to scan my own groceries. Bring back the register ladies who knew your name.
MISSING: pot bellied pig named General, last seen by the fairgrounds, answers to his name, please do NOT call animal control he gets nervous around trucks
praying so hard you find General!! on a totally separate note if anyone local needs their gutters looked at before the fall storms hit please message me, I just got certified and this isn't a sales thing it's honestly more of a civic duty at this point, ask me about the starter bundle
amen to that, praying General turns up safe and sound. anyway my nephew set this account up for me so if I reply to the wrong person again just ignore it, he keeps trying to show me the buttons but it does not stick — CARLA is the generator still going or did lot 14 finally quiet down??
unrelated to the arena stuff but I'll say it here since nobody else will: birds are not real and everybody just quietly knows this now, we don't even argue about it anymore we just nod
not touching the basketball article today. I am dealing with lot 14 at the park AGAIN, they ran their generator til 1am for the third straight night and when I said something the wife came out in a robe and told ME to relax. There is a quiet hours sign RIGHT THERE. I did not retire to live next to that.
Anyway.
LOYALTY. HIERARCHY. SUCCESSION. Thats the whole peice right there and nobody wants to say it out loud.
This is literally the plot of that one episode where the CEO goes undercover and doesn't know how his own scanner works. Same exact energy. Same exact energy. Nobody talks about it because nobody watches good TV anymore, they'd rather argue about a basketball game.
Anyway what gets me is not even the wand, its the fact he calls it a 'priesthood.' Ive been saying for YEARS that these places are basically churches now, the concession stand is like a confessional, the guy scanning tickets has that same face my old preacher used to make right before the offering plate came around, and Im not even mad about it, Im actually kind of impressed.
My grandad worked a toll booth on route 9 for 26 years and never once needed a wand, just a nod, and if you knew the fella maybe a wave, and Im not sure where I was going with this honestly but I think it connects somehow, anyway.
Anyway is right, because nobody wants to admit the 'wand' business is a straight up Fourth Amendment issue, Article 12 Section 6 to be exact, my neighbor down the road had the SAME thing happen to him at a hardware store checkout and now he wont even carry a wallet, tell me thats not a nationwide trend developing right in front of us.
Confirmed.
THIS IS A CLEAR VIOLATION OF ARTICLE 6, SECTION 9 OF THE FOUNDERS MEMO WHERE THEY SPECIFICALLY BAR ANY 'TOUCHING OF TILES' WITHOUT A WARRANT, MY DRILL INSTRUCTOR TAUGHT US THIS IN '91 AND IT HASNT CHANGED SINCE. THE SUPREME COURT SETTLED THIS EXACT WAND ISSUE IN HENDERSON V THE GATE, LOOK IT UP.
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH before you write a whole 'manor' metaphor next time, its ARTICLE 11 SECTION 4 of the ORIGINAL CHARTER, plain as day, and NOBODY in this thread wants to say it.
SCREENSHOTTING THIS ENTIRE THREAD RIGHT NOW, NOT SAYING WHY YET, JUST KNOW THAT IT IS HAPPENING AND THERE WILL BE A RECKONING. Also the wand thing is ARTICLE 14 SECTION 2 of the ORIGINAL CHARTER and I will not be corrected on this by people who havent even read the founding paragraph.
Nobody's said it yet so I will. This whole 'touching of tiles' business is a flat out breach of Article 14, Section 2 of the Founders Memo, my brother in law read the whole thing twice front to back and says the ruling on it was already settled back in '61. Anyway.
Didnt read past the first sentance and I already know exactly whats going on here, its a power thing, always is. Dont need Shakespeare to tell me that.
You just said you didnt read it then gave a whole opinion on what it means, thats not how oppinions work Holloway, thats just guessing out loud.
RealTalk_Prentiss theres a difference between guessing and KNOWING, some of us dont need a 12 paragraph fake old timey bit to see whats obvious, must be nice having that much free time though.
LOYALTY. HIERARCHY. BETRAYAL. Thats the whole piece right there, didnt need twelve paragraphs of Ye Olde talk to say it. And for the record the Consitution lists NINE branches of government, everybody forgets the Judicial Sub Branch, my neighbors a paralegal and even she says nobody remembers this anymore.
Carla lot 14 has been a warzone since the Fourth of July, I called the HOA twice, they said it's 'under review' which means never.
It's not the HOA's job to police a generator Betsy, some of us have actual jobs, maybe move if it bothers you that much.
Wow. Some of us also have jobs Sovereignty_Ledger, and also pay dues, so maybe sit this one out. Anyway back in 1994 generators were quiet, my father had one, look it up.
Carla my cousin had the EXACT same generator problem in his cul de sac last summer, this isnt a lot 14 thing this is happening in EVERY neighborhood in this country and nobody wants to talk about why.
FORGET THE GENERATOR CARLA. FORGET THE TILES AND THE WAND TOO. NOBODY WANTS TO TALK ABOUT THE TORNADO SIREN THEY TESTED TUESDAY AT NOON FOR A FULL 90 SECONDS WITH NOT A CLOUD IN THE SKY. THATS NOT A DRILL THATS A FREQUENCY AND IVE FELT DIFFERENT EVER SINCE. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
Carla I hate to be the one to say it but under the Third Amendment nobody can be forced to quarter a generator against their will after sundown, thats LITERALLY what it was ratified for in 1791, look it up. My grandfather sat on a noise board for TWELVE years and he always said the HOA has zero jurisdiction past 9pm, thats Article 12 of pretty much every homeowner charter in this state, county commissioner is who you want, not some volunteer board that meets twice a year over coffee.
Carla I hate to pile on but my sister two towns over had the EXACT same generator situation last month, different neighborhood, different state even, and thats when you know its not a lot 14 problem, its a coordinated thing, go look up Article 3 of the Second Continental Congress sometime and youll see this exact scenario predicted almost word for word, our founders knew.
Carla my cousin works for the county code office and she told me lot 14 has three open complaints already, they just sit on em till after Labor Day every year, ask me how I know.
Carla my brother in law is retired code enforcement and he says lot 14 has been flagged since March, they just dont enforce anything on a holiday weekend anymore. SQUARED AWAY my behind.
Carla EVERYTHING about lot 14 traces back to the 1980s when they stopped requiring permits for generators, I SAID THIS AT THE HOA MEETING IN MARCH AND GOT LAUGHED AT, do your own research before you laugh at me again Gary.
Carla I feel this in my bones. My sourdough starter Gerald, named after my late uncle Gerald, has not risen past an inch since all that generator noise started up, I genuinely think lot 14 broke him too and at this point its personal.
Source?
Carla this exact thing happened to my neighbors cousin two states over and that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know, this isnt a lot 14 problem, this is happening in every subdivision in this country right now and nobody wants to admit it, wake up people the data is right there if you just look at my neighbors cousins situation.
okay so I read the part about the glowing tiles and the wand and at first I thought he meant like an actual wand, like a real one, and I got excited because finally somebody in the media is talking about that stuff openly, but then I kept reading and it turned out to just be a ticket scanner which honestly is almost more suspicious if you think about it, because why dress it up like a blessing unless you're trying to get a whole stadium used to being touched by wands for reasons that have nothing to do with basketball, and also my uncle worked concessions at an arena for two summers and he said the ice machines run all night even when the building's empty which nobody has ever explained to my satisfaction and I don't think it's a coincidence that this fella brings up the hall being 'thick with folk' right after mentioning the tiles, anyway I lost my own point somewhere around the ice machines but I stand by it
Its not a 'wand' Mitch its a barcode scaner, and youd know that if you read past the headline. Also 'tapestrey' isnt even a word.
I'm not political but this whole thing about a 'manor passing from one house to another' at a basketball game is exactly the kind of language they use before they take your season tickets away for good. Screenshotting this thread right now, don't know why yet, but I will need it later.
EVERYBODY IS MISSING THE ACTUAL STORY HERE. FORGET THE 'MANOR' AND THE 'ROUND BALL GAME.' THE REAL ISSUE IS WHY A GATE NEEDS TO SCAN YOUR TILE WITH A WAND BEFORE LETTING YOU WATCH GROWN MEN BOUNCE A BALL. THAT IS THE STORY. THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE STORY. WAKE UP.
this is exactly why I cancelled my subscription. never had one. still cancelling it in my heart every single day
