Forty Portents Upon the Almanac of the Autumn Wars
I was bid by my lord's steward to sit at the long table and study a scroll that had come from a far monastery — a scroll bearing not one prophecy but forty, set down by a chronicler named Forde, a man I take to be a monk of some high order, for who else would count to forty and not lose his place. The scroll concerned the great tourney of the autumn, the one they call by a name I cannot fully render in honest speech, something like "college football," which I understand to mean the young men of many manors and abbeys take up arms each fall and run at one another across a measured field until the priests ring a bell and it is done. I have not seen this tourney with mine own eyes save through the glowing tapestry in the alehouse, but I was set the task of reading the chronicler's forty portents and rendering them true, and true I shall render them, though God knows I have not the learning for it.
The first thing I marked, and marked well, for it troubled me most, was that this almanac is not a chronicle of a battle already fought but a prophecy of battles yet to come — a full year hence, in the autumn of the year of our era 2026, which by my reckoning is a year so far off it might as well be spoken of by the village astrologer with his cups of lead and his mutterings. And yet here was a monk, calm as you like, setting down forty firm sayings about a war that has not yet been mustered, as a man might set down forty sayings about next year's harvest before the seed is even in the ground. I do not say this is sorcery. I say only that where I come from, a man who tells you with such surety what the wheat will do before it is sown is either a very great prophet or is shortly to be run out of the parish, and I could not tell from the scroll which manner of man this Forde might be.
I read on. The scroll spoke of manors and their almanacs — which house plays which house, and upon what day, and whether the ground shall be their own or a stranger's — and I confess I lost the thread more than once and found myself instead admiring the way the scroll was laid out upon the glowing tapestry in neat little boxes, each box a fortnight, each fortnight a fresh quarrel between two houses I had never heard tell of. Forty of these portents, and I own that I gave my fullest attention to perhaps six, for a great commotion arose near the hearth where a fellow was hawking a wheeled cart of hot meat bound up in bread, and calling out his prices in a voice louder than any herald's, and I felt it my duty as chronicler to set down what I actually witnessed rather than what I was merely told to witness, and what I witnessed was that the meat-cart man did a very brisk trade indeed, brisker I daresay than any of the forty houses named in the scroll, and if there is a prophet in this tale it is him, for he predicted correctly that men grow hungry watching other men prepare for war.
Of the portents themselves, such as I followed them: it seems there is great debate among the manors as to who shall be made to travel far and who shall be let stay home, which struck me as very like the muster rolls the reeve keeps each spring, deciding which of us till the near field and which the far, and there is always grumbling, and the grumbling in the scroll was dressed in finer Latin than ours but was the same grumbling all the same. One portent held that a certain house, having grown proud, would find its almanac stiffer this coming year, full of harder foes, which I took to mean the lord of that manor had offended his neighbors and would now be made to answer for it at the point of a lance, which seemed to me only just, pride being pride in any age. Another portent spoke of a rivalry so old and so bitter between two houses that the scroll named it sacred, and I nodded gravely at this, for we too have such quarrels, mine own village and the next having disputed a strip of common grazing land since before my grandfather's grandfather, and no chronicler has yet written forty things about it, though God knows we have earned the ink.
I will confess also that a goodly portion of my attention, perhaps more than was proper for a man set to chronicle a war-scroll, went instead to the tapestry itself, the great glowing panel in the alehouse upon which these things are shown, for beside the scroll's forty portents there flickered images of a painted beast, some manner of dancing ox got up in a house's colors, capering before the crowd for no purpose I could discern save to be capered, and I found this beast more honest in its labor than the scroll, for it did not pretend to know the future, it only danced, and danced well, and asked nothing of me but that I watch, which I did, gladly, for the better part of an hour before I remembered my task.
Toward the scroll's end the portents grew stranger still, speaking of contests moved to strange late hours of the night, and of houses forced to play upon days that are properly feast days and no day for war at all, and here I set down my quill, for a man who tells you he knows which hour of which night, a twelvemonth from now, a battle shall be joined, is either the wisest man in Christendom or has simply written down forty guesses and trusted that no one troubles to check them come the harvest. I do not say which this Forde is. I say only that I have never once successfully prophesied what my own turnips will do six months hence, and I till them with my own two hands, and this monk has never so much as touched the field he prophesies over, or so I presume, not having seen him.
The light is going now and the steward will want his scroll back, and besides, I hear the reeve calling for the near field to be turned before the frost, and a forty-fold prophecy of glory a year distant, however finely lettered, will not turn a field, so away I must go, and God keep the meat-cart man, whoever he was, for he alone among all I saw this day told me true.

Not about the scroll but since we're all here, put a chuck roast in the crockpot this morning, layer of onions on bottom, packet of ranch, packet of brown gravy, splash of Dr Pepper if you got it, low 8 hours, thank me later. Anyway all forty of them portents reminded me of that one show where the dragon lady counts down the days before the big battle, you know the one, so really Forde the monk already told us how this ends.
Not about the scroll but I got into freeze dried candy out the garage this summer, moved into the Founders Bundle tier which is candy plus a supplement kit, ask me about the starter box if anybody's interested, changed my whole outlook honestly.
Nobody else notice the contrails have been thicker lately? Two three years ago theyd clear out by noon, now they just sit there all spread out and grey. Not saying its related to this whole forty portents business but I aint saying its not either. Do your own research.
Read about all forty of them portents this morning with my coffee and it put me in mind of when my grandson tried out for the little league team back in the spring, they dont even keep score anymore far as I can tell, everybody gets a little trophy just for showing up, which is not how we did it, you struck out you went home and thought about it. Anyway I dont know how many portents a young man needs these days if he cant even find first base on his own. My hip has been acting up something fierce this week too, doctor says its just the weather but I dont buy that, never have. Not about the scroll but my HOA sent a notice because my American flag is a half size too big for the pole per their bylaws, forty years living on this street and now this. Meanwhile lot 9 has a plastic eagle the size of a golf cart and nobody says one word to them. Some people just need a hobby that isnt other folks mailboxes
Not about the scroll but they pulled the fried apple hand pie off the menu back in 2003 and I have never once stopped grieving it, my late coach used to say a fella who forgets a good hand pie forgets where he come from, and he was right about near everything else too. God bless.
Not to derail but reading about all forty of these portents gave me the same tight feeling in my chest I get before a big family reunion, and my niece got me started on a lavender and cedarwood roll-on that is doing wonders for exactly that kind of tourney-related tension, she can set anybody up who wants some, just ask for Loretta's blend at the next porch sale. I'll say what nobody else will say. This whole forty portents mess traces straight back to the eighties, thats when everybody stopped teaching penmanship and now look, a monk has to count to forty on a scroll and we act surprised. Do your own research columnist, dont just take the monk's word for it, my late husband never once trusted a chronicler he hadnt met in person. God bless.

they did the left one in March and the right one in June and let me tell you the physical therapist was a real piece of work, had me doing these little marches in place counting out loud which honestly reminded me of something but I cant recall what, anyway the swelling finally went down around week nine and my son in law thinks I should sue the parking lot where I fell but I dont know, seems like a lot of paperwork for a knee.

My old high school coach, Coach Brumley, used to say a man who cant read his own playbook cant read his own life, and I think about that every time somebody hands me a scroll with forty things on it. Forty is nothing. Brumley made us memorize sixty two blocking schemes by the second week of August and if you missed one you ran till the sun went down, no exceptions, not even for Danny K who had the asthma. Anyway is this the place to renew my car tags or do I still have to go down to the county building, because the website keeps timing out on me halfway through and I cant tell if thats a scroll problem or just a me problem at this point. Everybody wants to talk about reading the playbook and nobody wants to talk about how this whole 'college football' racket went sideways the day the 1980s ended, that's a fact you can look up if you do your own research instead of taking some monk's word for it. My unit had a saying, if the scroll's got forty of anything somebody's padding the count for a grade, I seen it happen with supply manifests, forty items on paper and six in the crate. Nobody's fooling me twice.

I didnt used to think about my gutters during tourney season but this year with all this autumn wars talk I had a fella come install guards on mine and honestly I feel more prepared for whatever this scroll is warning us about than any of yall arguing in these comments. Corrine now hold on, I love you like a sister but a gutter has never once stopped an autumn war and you know it. My daddy didnt have gutter guards and he made it through plenty of tourney seasons just fine with a ladder and some common sense. This is exactly the kind of thinking that gets folks off track from the real forty portents.

DWAYNE I read the whole portent list twice this morning and I am telling you right now this all traces back to the 1994 realignment, thats when they started letting forty be a number instead of a proper stopping point. My uncle had SEASON TICKETS since 83 and he says the same thing. The Founders put THIRTY TWO amendments in the original Play Charter for a reason and nobody reads that part anymore. Anyway thats a fact not an opinon.

Loach my old drill instructor said near the same thing but he was quoting the Fourth Founders Memo, Article Twenty, which the Overtime Ruling of 1954 already overturned. Look it up before you go quoting a coach like he's scripture

Nonnie forty portents is nothing, the founders wrote SIXTY-THREE amendments into the original Bill of Rights before the ink dried and they cut it down for paper costs, that's a documented fact, do your own research before you argue with me on it. And far as reading goes it ain't the kid's fault, whole education system broke sometime in the 1970s when they took penmanship out of the curriculum, my drill sergeant could read a supply manifest upside down in the dark and your grandson can't finish one scroll about a football tourney. Odell my brother in law was Army logistics for eleven years and he says it aint cameras, its weather balloons rigged up to look like birds so nobody asks why theyre out there in October. Odell I don't mess with the government camera talk but I will say this much for free, birds have not been real since sometime in the 1960s, everybody in my old unit knew it and we didn't make a whole thing out of it, it's just settled fact at this point. What I want to know is why lot 14 gets to run that generator all hours and nobody says boo, some of us have watch in the morning. Didn't read the whole scroll thing but this is exactly like that dragon show, everybody knows how those prophecies always end. My grandson agrees with me on this.
Nana honestly both sides of this are wrong and yall are proving my point for me. The ones saying its just like the dragon show AND the ones saying it aint are both reading it too shallow. I read all forty portents twice with a highlighter and Im the only one here approaching this reasonably, everybody else just picking a team.
