Of the Ball That Was a Homer and Then Was Not, and the Sorcery of the Little Glass Eye
I have been bid by them that feed me to set down what I saw at the great contest between the men of Baltimore and the men of New York, and I will tell it true, though God knows I have not the learning for it, and my hand shakes some from the strangeness of the telling.
It was a rounders-match, or near enough — a game of sticks and leather orbs and much running between four stone markers set in a diamond, which any fool can see is a good honest shape for a threshing floor, and I said as much to the man beside me, who did not answer, being occupied with a tube of spiced meat he had bought from a cart.
The Orioles, who I am told are a fine flock though I saw no birds upon the field nor any nest, sent forth their champion, a broad fellow called Alonso, to swing his club at the leather orb. And swing he did, and God as my witness the orb went up and up into the high air like a lark loosed from a hawk's jess, and it went out over the low wall at the field's far edge, and every soul in that vast round barn of a place rose up roaring as one great beast, and I rose with them, for I know a mighty blow when I see one, plague or no plague, and I confess I wept a little, for it seemed to me the finest thing I had witnessed since the harvest moon stood full and red over my own poor turnip rows.
The bird-men — the Orioles, that is — did leap from their bench and embrace one another, and I took it for won, and rightly so, for a ball struck clean over a wall is a goal in any game I have ever heard tell of, be it football or quoits or the throwing of the plowman's boot at Michaelmas.
But then — and here, good reader, is where the black work of the age crept in — the men in black, who I take to be reeves of some sort set to keep the peace of the field, did gather round a little glowing eye of glass no bigger than a communion wafer, and did stare into it a long while, murmuring, as monks murmur over a disputed relic. And when they had done their staring, they raised their arms and declared the mighty blow foul, as though it had never been struck at all, as though the lark had never left the hawk's glove.
I did not understand it then and I do not understand it now. I have seen a bailiff cheat a weighing of grain with a false stone on the scale, and I have seen a miller's thumb press down where it ought not, but I have never before seen a man stare into a lit glass egg and by that staring alone unmake a thing that four thousand souls had watched happen with their own two eyes. Is this eye a scrying-glass? Does some sprite dwell within it, jealous of home runs, who whispers false counsel to the reeves? The bird-men's captain marched out and shouted long and hard at the man who holds the glass eye's counsel, and I liked him better for it, for a man who will shout at a sorcerer on behalf of his fellows is a man with some spine in him, whatever manor he serves.
The crowd did not take it kindly either. They set up such a howling and a hurling of drink-cups as I have not seen since the year the tithe was doubled, and I confess it warmed my heart somewhat, for it is good to know that in this shining loud age men will still riot honestly when they feel they have been robbed, same as at home.
Now I must own, in fairness, that I gave over a goodly portion of my watching to the man with the meat-cart, who worked a little wheeled forge with great skill, laying long pink tubes of spiced flesh upon a hissing griddle and dressing them in yellow mustard-paste and a green pickled relish, and passing them up into the stands on trays, and I studied his labor closer than I studied the game itself, for it is honest craft, cart-work, and I know honest craft when I see it, whereas I do not know rounders. There was also a great beast of paint and felt, orange of hue, that danced along the wall's top and did no threshing and tended no field that I could see, and a man with a shepherd's whistle who ran about blowing it at intervals for reasons known only to himself and his god, and a tapestry of light hung high above us all, vast as the night sky, upon which numbers changed by unseen hand — sorcery again, I do not doubt, though a gentler sort, for it seemed to trouble no one.
As to the disputed blow itself: I am told by them who explained it to me after, slow and patient as one explains rain to an ox, that the ball had passed a pole of foul demarcation on the wrong side of true, by some measure so small that only the glowing eye and not the naked eye of any of the four thousand souls present could discern it. This I find hardest of all to credit. In my village, when the reeve measures a strip of land, he measures it with a rod and a chain and his own two eyes, and if a man disputes it, they walk the ground together and settle it like men. Here they trust the ground to no man, only to the little eye, and when the little eye speaks, four thousand roars mean nothing against it. It is a marvel and a horror both, and I do not know which more.
So the bird-men's mighty blow was struck from the record as though the lark had flown back into the hawk's glove of its own accord, and the game ground on without it, checkmates and touchdowns and whatnot I could not properly count, for by then my attention had gone again to the meat-cart man, who had begun upon a fresh tray of the pink tubes, and I watched him dress each one with the same careful hand, mustard first and then the relish, and thought there is a man who knows his trade start to finish, which is more than I can say for whatever craft the little glass eye practices.
I do not know who won. I did not stay to see the numbers settle upon the great tapestry, for the light was going gold and long the way it does over my own hedgerow of an evening, and something in me — some old and honest thing that has survived even this strange transplanting — told me the field wanted tending, though I have no field here, only the seats and the shouting and the smell of spiced meat, and a foul pole I still do not trust.
I must away. The light will not wait on wonders, however great.

didnt even finish this whole article if Im honest, skimmed the first two lines about the sticks and the leather orb, but I already know exactly whats going on here, its literally the exact same plot as that one episode of Andy Griffith where the ball goes over the fence and the whole town argues about who owns it, case closed far as Im concerned

had my knee scoped back in March and let me tell you the recovery was nothing like they told me, six weeks they said, SIX, more like eleven and I still cant kneel right on the left one to this day. anyway good article I guess, my nephew plays rounders too or whatever they call it now
