On the Practice-Field of the Norsemen and the Great Black Bird

I was bid go and watch two hosts drill together upon a field, and God knows I have seen stranger commissions, but none I understood less by the going. They told me it was the Vikings against the Ravens, and I confess my heart near stopped in my breast, for I have heard tell of Norse raiders since I was a boy at my mother's knee, and I did not know we kept a raven of such size and temper in this land that it required a whole company of men in pads to answer it. I went with my stick and my bread heel and I watched, and by my troth I still do not rightly know what passed, but I set it down true as I saw it, for that is my labor and I do not shirk it.

They say this was the second day the two hosts met upon this field, which is a mercy, for I should not have known what to make of the first day cold. There is, it seems, a custom before the great tourney proper where two rival camps come together not to settle their quarrel but to rehearse it gently, as a man might thresh a little grain before the harvest to see the flail sits right in his hand. I marked this and thought it wise. Even the reeve lets a boy swing the scythe once at nothing before he sends him into the standing wheat.

The Vikings I knew for Norsemen at once by their horned look, though on closer study I own the horns were absent and the men wore great domed casques of a purple hue instead, smooth as a kettle, with no plume nor horn upon them at all, which puzzled me, for what manner of Norseman goes bare-headed of horn into a fray. I set it down that these were perhaps a gentler, more Christianized stock of raider, softened by long residence in this country, who had traded the horn for the kettle-hat and the longship for whatever great rumbling wagons stood beyond the field, and I did not think this an unreasonable article of faith, for men do change with the land they settle.

The Ravens I confess I never once saw. I looked for the bird the whole morning, craning my neck at the great glowing tapestry that hung above one end of the field displaying numbers I could not construe, thinking the beast might be trained to perch there, or that it should come wheeling down from on high at the sound of the horn to settle the day's honor. It did not come. In its place stood men in black and purple — nay, I misspeak, the black-clad men wore a different purple than the kettle-hatted Norsemen, a deeper and more sable shade, near to a raven's own feather now I think on it, and I concluded the bird's spirit had simply entered into these men entire, the way the priest tells us the dove enters into a man at his confirming, and that this was why they call themselves by the bird's name and need no actual bird upon the field. It is not for me to question a mystery. I have seen stranger things done with holy water.

The contest itself I watched close as I was able. It seemed less a battle than a great slow catechism repeated over and over, the two hosts lining up opposite one another many dozens of times, a smaller man crouched at the front of one line who would cry out a string of numbers as though reciting his tithe-debt before the whole assembly, and then all would surge together with a great clap of leather on leather, like two flocks of geese meeting head to head over a single fish, and then stop, and walk back, and do it again. I counted this done above two hundred times before the sun stood at noon and I confess by the fortieth I had lost the thread of who was winning, if winning is even the article at stake, for no one score was kept that I could find upon any parchment, and the great glowing tapestry only ever showed the same idle numbers the whole morning through, unmoved by all that clashing, so that I wonder now if it is not simply an ornament, a stained window for men who have no church nearby to look upon.

I will own plainly that a fair portion of my dispatch belongs not to the Norsemen nor the raven-men at all but to a small wheeled stall set back from the field where a fellow in an apron sold tubes of meat, pink and glistening, nested in a soft white bread the like of which I have never had at home, and dressed over with a yellow humor that stung pleasantly on the tongue. I watched this commerce longer than I watched the drilling, I confess it freely, for the queue before his stall was thick and constant and his trade brisk in a way I found more comprehensible than anything happening upon the grass, coin for meat-tube being an exchange I have understood since I was old enough to walk to market. He wore upon his cart a painted sign of a beast I could not name, some manner of grinning ox standing upright on two legs, which I took at first for a third company come to join the contest, until I saw it only ever danced along the sideline waving its stiff felt arms at children and never once set foot upon the field of battle itself. A coward beast, I judged it, or else a holy fool kept for luck, as some manors keep a hunchback for the same purpose, and I bore it no ill will either way.

Twice during the morning all the men upon the field, both Norse and raven-kind together, seemed for a heartbeat to run backward, their legs working in reverse of nature, before the world righted itself and went forward again as before. I set this down as witchcraft plain and will not soften it. Perhaps it is a working the priests here have made peace with; perhaps the two hosts share a wizard between them for the day, as rival lords will sometimes share a physician in time of plague, professional courtesies extending even into contest. I do not judge it. I only report that I saw the world run backward twice before dinner and no man on that field so much as blinked.

By the time the sun leaned west the two hosts shook hands most cordially, which comforted me greatly, for I had feared this rehearsal might spill into true blood before its season, and instead I saw only weariness and good will between raven and Norseman both, the kettle-hats tucked under arms, the meat-tube fellow counting his coin with the satisfied look of a man who has had the better day of anyone present. I cannot tell you who won. I do not think winning was on offer. I think it was only two great households showing each other, in the gentlest violence they know, that they are ready for what comes.

The light goes now and my own field wants tending, real turnips being a more pressing article than painted oxen, so I must away and leave the rest of this marvel to abler quills than mine.

Yours in bafflement and duty, Hodge o' the Field

off the bird debate entirely but has anyone else clocked how thick the contrails have gotten over the practice fields lately, my unit used to be able to see clean sky over the stadium lot every morning formation and now its just crosshatched white from one end to the other by 0800, thats not normal jet traffic for a town this size and I got twenty years telling me so.

nobody wants to hear this but the REAL issue with the whole practice field business is nobody mentions what these men are even eating out there to have that kind of stamina, I switched to only beige foods two weeks ago, potatoes, rice, plain chicken, the occasional saltine, and I have more energy than I did at twenty two. my knees dont even ache during the cold front anymore. anyway both hosts should try it before the tourney proper, thats free advice and I dont even charge for it

LIBERTY_AMMENDMENT close but no, Amendment Nineteen never had a Section Eight, it stopped at Six after the reorganization, my father in law was stationed at the actual treaty signing in 61 and he says the bird clause got folded into the general orders and never came back out as its own document. People keep citing sections that got absorbed. Read the general orders sometime instead of a summary somebody's cousin typed up.
