A Dispatch from the Field of Monuments, Where Chariots Ran and No God Struck Them Down
I am bid to watch the great games and set down what I see, and God be good, I have done my level best, though what I saw yesterday I do not have the learning to name rightly, and so I shall name it as I saw it and let wiser men sort the wheat from the chaff.
I was sent word that a contest was to be run upon the great mall of the lords — a long green common between two mighty white halls, the kind of ground a reeve would hang a man for grazing goats on without leave — and that chariots would run there, thick and fast, before the very tombs and towers of the old kings. I confess I did not believe it at first. A man does not expect to see a race of chariots pass beneath the shadow of a monument built, so I am told, to a man who chopped down a cherry tree and would not lie about it, which is more honesty than I have had from any reeve in my life. But there it was, God as my witness, and I went, because it is my labor to go, and a serf does not choose his labor.
The chariots themselves I must describe plain, for I have not the word for them proper. They are carts, low and sharp as a plow-blade, with no oxen at all — not one beast in harness anywhere upon that whole green — and yet they went faster than any horse I ever saw run from a wolf. I asked a man beside me by what sorcery this was done and he looked at me very strange and said "engine," which I took to be the name of a small devil kept in a box beneath the seat, fed on some black humour that stinks of the pits below a tannery. I did not press him further. There are questions a man is better off not answering in this age, same as any other.
The chariots went round and round the common in a great circle, past the white towers, and every time they came past the crowd made a noise like the whole parish shouting down a poacher, though no poacher was in evidence, only the chariots, going round again. I counted the going-round eleven times before I lost my count in the roaring, and I do not know if going-round-and-round is itself the whole of the contest or only a part of it, the way a man might plow the same furrow eleven times before the priest tells him the field is done, but no priest came to tell anyone anything, and so they kept going round.
I will say plain, reader, that the chariots themselves held my eye less than the man selling meat from a little wheeled house. This I understood entirely, and so I gave it the greater part of my watching, and I do not repent it. He had a cart no bigger than a hen-coop, and from it he drew forth long pale tubes of meat, tucked snug into a soft white trencher-bread, and dressed over with a yellow humour that I took at first for mustard-seed oil, which we have at home, though ground finer and gone strange in colour. The queue for this man's cart was longer than the queue I once stood in for the miller at Michaelmas, and I understood that queue, for grain is grain and a man must eat. This queue I understood also, in the end, for meat-tube-in-bread is a fine thing and I had one myself, given in charity by a woman who took pity on my dress, which she called "a costume," though it is only my own clothes, the ones I have always had.
There was also, hard by the meat-cart, a man selling a drink of such a bright unnatural blue that I would not have touched it had I found it in the physic-garden, being certain it was poison meant for rats, but folk drank it gladly and did not die before my eyes, so I set down only what I saw and no more.
Of the chariots and their drivers I can tell you this much true: they went very fast, and one of them, near the third going-round, came near to striking another, and the whole common gasped as one man gasps when the miller's boy nearly loses his hand in the wheel, and then it did not happen, and the chariot went on, and the crowd cheered as if a saint had intervened, which for aught I know one had, this being a strange country with strange saints I have not met. I do not know which chariot triumphed at the end, for by then the light was going long and gold across the white towers, and a great bell somewhere was making a sound I took for vespers, though no one else seemed to mark it.
I marked too a thing I cannot account for at all: a man stood upon a little platform near the meat-carts holding up before the crowd a black slab no bigger than a psalter, and folk gathered round him three and four deep, more rapt than they were for the chariots themselves, and he spoke of it in a voice like a fair-day huckster, though what virtue the slab held I could not say, only that it seemed to please them mightily, and I set it down here because I saw it and it is my duty to set down what I see, whether or no I understand the meaning in it. This is, I have come to accept, most of what I do in this age: I see, and I do not understand, and I write it down regardless, for that is the shape of my labor and I will not shirk it for want of understanding.
The chariots ran on past sundown, torches lit along the great common, and the beasts of thunder — for so I must call them, having no gentler word for a thing that roars like ten dragons and smells of the pit — went round and round before the white towers of the old kings until I could no longer tell one from another, and still the crowd did not tire of it, and still I did not understand it, and still I watched, because a man watches what he is set to watch, be it sheep or chariots, and does not ask the sheep to explain themselves either.
The light is near gone now over the common as I set this down, and somewhere behind me the meat-cart man is drawing in his awning for the night, and I find I have written more of him than of the race itself, which I cannot help, being made as I am. My own field is a long way from here and untended too long already, and something in me — some old bone-deep clock that no chariot or blue drink or black singing slab has yet driven out of me — says the light is going and the furrow wants walking before full dark.
I am away to it now, as ever, though I could not for the life of me tell you which chariot won.

OFF TOPIC BUT RELEVANT if this whole chariot situation has your nerves shot like it has mine, I have a blend that addresses that EXACT stress response, its not the lavender everybody already tried its a different one. Rubbed one drop behind each ear before I even opened this article and read the whole thing calm as a lake. Message me for the info, its not what you think and I am NOT asking you to buy anything, just informing.
Watched the highlight reel again with my second coffee this morning. Say what you want about the chariots but my neighbor's boy raced dirt bikes one summer and it did wonders for his posture, so maybe there's something to letting young fellas run fast at something. Anyway. God bless.
I'm not political but if they can run chariots on federal grass then I should be allowed to park my boat there for the weekend too, thats just equal treatment under whatever document rickp53 was going on about earlier.
is this the site where I renew my car tags because every link on here just brings me right back to chariots. ALSO totally unrelated, had my knee scoped back in April, was up walking in two days flat, my cousin says thats impossible but I did it and I have the paperwork.
not to change the subject but if that mall floods even a little (and with all this chariot traffic packing the grass down flat it WILL) every building around there is going to need proper gutter guards before winter hits. not about the chariots at all but our emu Gerald has been acting strange since the weekend, wont come to the fence for his corn like usual, just stands out by the tree line staring at nothing, if anybody has seen an emu acting strange out that way please let us know, he is not aggressive just going through something I think. THE REAL ISSUE NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT is not the chariots, not the permits, not the Article whatever number, its that we let a grown man write this entire piece in fake old timey English and everyone just went along with it like thats normal. Reeve. Serf. Who talks like that. I looked it up and there is no rule anywhere, in any founding document, that requires a news writer to sound like he just crawled out of a well in the year 1300. Somebody needs to fact check the ACTUAL writing style before we fact check the chariots.
The real issue, and I mean the REAL one, is that nobody stops to think about what these young men racing chariots are doing to their backs, I had a cousin who threw his back out just lifting a hay bale wrong and he was never the same in the garden after that, could barely bend to pull a weed, and it makes you wonder about the long term plan here for these boys. Speaking of the garden, we lost General somewhere between the tomato rows and the back fence Tuesday evening. General is our pot bellied pig, about the size of an ottoman, answers mostly to his name but sometimes just to the sound of the screen door, and if anybody out past the county line sees a pig looking a little lost and a little judgmental about it that is him, please just call the number on his collar and dont chase him, he does not care for being chased, never has. Anyway I forget what I was even saying about the chariots. Something about backs. God bless and keep an eye out for General.
@chaoticGoodPam_83 respectfully you are WRONG, the real issue here is Amendment 14 Section 8 which clearly states chariot exhibitions on federal greens require a full Founders Council vote first, my grandfathers grandfather signed a version of this at Yorktown so I do know a thing or two
@Liberty_Forge1776 there is no Amendment 14 Section 8 and there has never BEEN a Founders Council, you are inventing an entire branch of government right now in these comments. Amendment 3 Section 1 is the one that actually governs this and it says nothing about chariots at all which honestly proves my point better than yours does

I have SEEN this exact story play out on television, twice, with my own eyes. THAT SHOW CALLED THIS YEARS AGO AND NOBODY LISTENED. Not political, just pattern recognition.
unrelated to the chariots completely but does anyone else feel like self checkout machines are the actual downfall of civilization and not whatever this article is about. i stood there for 11 minutes yesterday because it kept saying UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA when the only item was the one item i scanned. a whole generation of cashiers just gone, replaced by a machine that accuses you of theft over a bag of onions. thats the real headline nobody is writing but ok sure lets talk about carts on a lawn instead.
I read the whole article twice and honestly both sides of this chariot argument are being a little silly if you ask me, which nobody did but here I am anyway. The permit people probably had their reasons, the racers probably needed the practice, and the monuments have seen worse in their day I imagine. I seem to be the only one in this whole comment section keeping a level head about it. Also my cousin works in government, not the chariot part exactly but close enough to it, and she says there is more to this permit than anybody is letting on. self checkout machines AND whatever is kicking up off that chariot dust over the mall, honestly both explained by the same root problem if you think about it long enough. I started doing a lavender rosemary roll-on behind each ear every morning and havent had one single bad thought about either situation since. ask me how, its not a scam its just chemistry
SELF CHECKOUT MACHINES AND PARTICIPATION TROPHIES ARE THE SAME PROBLEM IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT. Nobody wants to scan there own groceries or earn there own trophy anymore, THATS why nobody under 40 can drive a chariot straight either, mark my words.

EVERYBODY in this thread is wrong and I say that as the only one here being reasonable. my cousin works in government, transportation side, and she told me flat out both the pro-chariot people AND the anti-chariot people are missing it, its not about the mall its about who insured the horses. I'm not taking a side, I'm just saying I'm the only one not yelling
Watched this with my coffee this morning and had to sit with it a minute. Back in my day a race was a race and a monument was a monument and you didn't mix the two, but I suppose times change. Me and my buddy talk about stuff like this on our podcast, Two Guys One Shed, if you ever want two old men rambling for forty minutes about not much. So I watched the chariot thing on the news last night with the sound off because my neighbor was mowing and I gotta say the horses looked stressed, genuinely stressed, and nobody is talking about the horses.
Anyway that got me thinking about how Tuesdays never sit right with me, they never have, something about the middle of the week just feels off like the calendar is hiding something from us, and there's a whole Facebook group for people who feel the same way, we don't even argue in there we just post about it and feel understood, which is more than I can say for

THE REAL ISSUE NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT is not the chariots its WHO GAVE THEM THE PERMIT. You cannot just wake up and race chariots on federal ground, there is a whole process, my cousin works in permitting for a DIFFERENT county and even HE says this smells wrong. WAKE UP.
Not related to the chariots but since we are all here anyway — put 2 lbs chuck roast, a packet of dry onion soup mix, a can of cream of mushroom soup, and a splash of worcestershire in the crockpot on low for 8 hours, thank me later. Off topic but has anybody else noticed the contrails over the mall in these chariot photos are way thicker lately? Thats not normal jet exhaust folks, that is something else entirely being sprayed and I dont care what the weatherman says about it. Do your own research before you laugh.
the contrails thing reminds me, I had my knee scoped back in March, both knees actually not just the one, and the surgeon said the swelling would go down in six weeks but its been five months and I still cant kneel to garden, anyway I bet its the same chemical they put in the contrails causing the swelling nobody wants to connect those dots
@Soverignty_Now_76 both knees, that's rough, my sister in law did the freeze dried candy thing after HER knee surgery and honestly her energy came back within a week, I'm not saying its related but I'm not NOT saying it either. reading about your knees made me think of our goose, she is very intelligent, answers to whistling same as a dog would, and she has been missing since Sunday, if you hear whistling back near you and a goose comes running that might be ours, no she does not bite unless you deserve it. praying for your knees dear.

ok i need everyone to slow down because FactsDontCare_Truly is onto something real here. my cousin also works in a building that is NEAR government, different department but same parking garage even, and she says permits for stuff like this get rubber stamped by like ONE guy on a Tuesday with no oversight whatsoever, thats a fact, im not guessing. the chariot thing didnt come from nowhere, somebody signed a paper and nobody is asking who. also im not saying its a coverup im just saying if it WAS a coverup this is exactly what it would look like, a nice horse race so nobody looks at the paperwork side of things.
Didnt read past the first paragraph but this whole thing sounds like a massive waste of taxpayer money and I stand by that 100%. Chariots. In this economy. Meanwhile my property taxes went up again and nobody in Washington cares.
So let me get this straight, they are running CHARIOTS on the National Mall right next to the monuments and nobody thinks thats a problem?? This is literally the plot of that one gladiator show on the streaming service, the one where the empire falls because they let the games get out of hand. Also fun fact the Mall is FEDERAL common land protected under Article 9 of the Constitution, meaning you cant even walk a dog there without a permit let alone race horses pulling carts past the tombs of the old kings. @FactsDontCare_1791 actually its Article 12 Section 4 that governs public assembly on federal greens, look it up before you post. The founders were VERY clear about chariot racing near monuments, Jefferson wrote about it in a private letter that never gets taught in schools for some reason.
@rickp53 THATS WRONG and everyone needs to stop upvoting it. Its Article 9 Section 2 of the Founders Memo on Public Greens, 1791, that governs chariot assembly, NOT Article 12. The Supreme Court settled this in the Hooverville ruling. I dont make the rules I just READ THEM unlike some people.
I'm not political but if you people keep arguing about which Article it is I'm going to screenshot this ENTIRE thread and I don't even know why yet, I just feel like it needs to happen. rickp53 you might be right you might be wrong but either way somebody chiseled that mall out of federal ground for WALKING not RACING and that's Article 3 if anybody bothered to check, which nobody did.
EVERYBODY IN THIS THREAD IS CITING THE WRONG DOCUMENT AND ITS EMBARRASSING. rickp53 says Article 12 Section 4, Consitutionalist88 says Article 9 Section 2, both of you are off, its actually the Founders Memo Addendum 6 Clause 2, ratified 1961 after the Great Common Grazing Dispute, which specifically bars chariots from ANY green space within sight of a monument to a man who admitted to something as a child. Look it up. My brother in law clerked for a judge for TWO SUMMERS and he confirms this is basic stuff they teach you the first week. Its not even close. The mall thing is a straight up violation and somebody is getting a strongly worded letter.
