A True Accounting of the Five Solemn Vows Sworn by the Armored Men
Friend, I have been to the great field again, as is my charge, and I set it down here plain, though God knows I understood perhaps one turn in ten of what passed before me, and that turn I likely have wrong as well.
It came to my ears — for a crier in a bright coat announced it before the contest proper, in the way that heralds do before a joust, though this herald wore no colors of any house I know and spoke very fast — that the great armored men of this league, all of them together, of one accord, like a village agreeing at last on how the common field shall be plowed, have sworn among themselves to keep a close eye upon five particular sins. Five! Not four, not a dozen, but five, chosen out of what must be a great teeming flock of possible wrongs a man might commit while wearing a helm and running very hard at his fellow man. This struck me as wise. Even the reeve, when he comes round at Michaelmas to count what we owe, does not try to reckon every sin in the parish at once — he picks his battles, same as these men in their armor have picked theirs, and I confess I felt a kinship with them I did not expect to feel, watching from so very far outside the wall of the field.
I could not tell you the five sins by name, for the herald spoke them in a manner too swift for a man who reckons time by the church bell, but I gathered they concern the safety of the body, which seems to me a most Christian concern for men whose whole trade is to hurl themselves at one another like rams contesting a ewe in springtime. Where I come from, a man who struck his neighbor so hard as these men strike one another would be hauled before the manor court and made to pay a fine in eggs, or stand in the stocks while the children threw turnip peelings at him, and rightly so. Here, instead, they have made of it a covenant, a compact, a sort of tithe of good behavior that all the armored men swear together — and I am told the great lords who own the teams, who I picture as fat barons in high towers, counting coin and never once touching the field themselves, have agreed to it also, which is more than I can say for our own lord, who has never agreed to anything a serf proposed in the whole history of the manor.
Now, the game itself, near as I could follow it — and here I beg your patience, for I have not the learning for it — is played by two great households, each in their own colors, contesting for an egg-shaped stone across a field marked out in furlongs, or something very near a furlong, I did not have my rope to measure. The object, so far as my poor wit could discern, is to carry this stone to the far hedge without being struck down by the opposing household's men, who are permitted — nay, encouraged! — to tackle you as a wolf tackles a lamb, provided they do not commit one of the five newly-forbidden sins in the doing of it. I saw a man carry the stone the whole length of the field and the crowd rose up as one and roared fit to wake the dead, and I confess I do not know if this was a home run, of which I am told this game has many, or something else entirely, but it was plainly the finest thing that had happened all evening and I set it down as such.
I will tell you what I understood better than the game, and that is the man who sold the meat-tubes.
He stood behind a little wheeled stall not far from where I had been seated by whatever kindly soul mistook me for a ticketed man, and he called out his wares in a voice near as loud as the herald's, and he had a great tub of hissing water in which he kept perhaps forty of these tubes of meat at once, each one nestled in a soft white loaf, and a man could have one for coin, with a yellow sauce upon it if he liked, or a red one, or both, which seemed to me a decadence unheard of even at the Christmas feast. I watched this commerce for a good while — longer, I confess, than I watched the actual contest of the armored men, for the meat-tube trade was plain to me in every particular, the coin changing hands, the loaf, the tube, the sauces, the gratitude of the buyer, whereas the game itself kept doing things I could not account for, such as a moment where every man on the field seemed to walk backward all at once, as if time itself had been made to run the wrong way, which I take to be sorcery of some kind, though no one around me remarked upon it, which tells me it must happen often enough that decent folk have stopped being frightened of it.
There was also a great glowing tapestry hung high above the field, taller than any cathedral window, on which numbers and small moving pictures of the men themselves appeared, and a painted beast of some kind — a ram, I believe, or perhaps a hawk, I could not say for certain — that danced along the edge of the field between bouts, tending nothing, herding nothing, simply dancing, which struck me as a fine use for a beast if a fellow could arrange it, though I do not know how one teaches a ram to dance nor what such a creature is fed.
But I return, as I must, to the five sins, for that is the true matter of my report and I would not have you think I spent the whole evening on sausages. It is a good thing, I think, when men of great strength and great violence agree among themselves to spare one another the worst of it — not all of it, mind, for the game plainly requires some violence or there would be no game, only men standing about a field in armor looking foolish, but the worst five kinds, whatever they are. There is talk, the herald said, of contempt and courts and other households of the game — different from these armored men, more of the scholars' sort, young men who play for their colleges rather than their lords — refusing entry to certain veterans of the armored trade who wished to teach the young ones, and lawyers being brought in over it, which sounds to me exactly like the sort of dispute that ends with everyone poorer and only the lawyers fed, but that is a different field and a different day and my legs are already sore from standing at this one.
The light is going now, and there is a hedgerow behind wherever I am that wants tending, though I could not tell you which hedgerow nor whose, only that the feeling of it is very strong in me, and a serf does not argue with such feelings. I have set down what I saw, true as I know it, sausages and sorcery and solemn vows alike, and I leave the sorting of wheat from chaff to wiser heads than mine.

sorry to derail but before I forget, sending this along, if you reply Amen in the next hour a blessing comes to your household by weeks end, my sister in law ignored one of these in 2011 and her water heater went out THAT SAME NIGHT, dont say I didnt warn you. anyway good discussion everybody re: the vows.
gonna be honest i skimmed maybe two sentances of this article but that is PLENTY for me to say this is literally the exact plot of that one show where the sergeant makes everybody follow the same five rules and by season three it all falls apart because nobody actually reads the rules either. case closed. art imitates life.
OFF TOPIC and I know it but we lost our pot bellied pig General sometime Sunday night, gate musta not latched right. He answers to sweet boy and he is NOT food motivated so dont waste your time with corn, only thing that ever moved him was peanut butter crackers. Grandkids are worried sick over this. I'm not political but my HOA just sent a SECOND notice about my inflatable eagle, apparently 6 feet is 'not in keeping with neighborhood aesthetic,' meanwhile the Hendersons had a full nativity scene lit up through July and not one letter went out, screenshotting the notice as we speak just in case.

My old high school coach used to say a mans word is the only equipment he cant get suspended for, and I think about that every time one of these leagues rolls out a new rule. That said, and I say this as the only one in here actually thinkin straight, both sides of this five versus four fight are missin the point and both sides are also kind of right, which nobody wants to admit because it dont feel as good as pickin a team. I read the piece, I read this whole thread, I am the only reasonable person left standing here and that is not a brag it is just where the facts landed.

OFF TOPIC but has anyone else noticed the tornado siren out by the feed store been goin off at odd hours with nothin behind it, no storm no nothin. My grandkids been actin funny ever since, real quiet like, and I aint sayin its connected I am just askin the question out loud like a reasonable man does.
PapawEarl_of_6 with all due respect that siren has been tested every second Tuesday since 1994, its called maintenance, my late sister was on the volunteer fire auxiliary and she'd of told you the same. Your grandkids is quiet because its bedtime Earl, not because of no siren.

Everybody in here fighting about five versus four but I read the actual article twice and it says FIVE SOLEMN VOWS right in the headline, thats not even up for debate, its in writing. What yall should really be asking is why armored men need a separate list of vows at all when the Ten Commandments already covers most of this ground, Exodus 20 if I remember right, maybe Deuteronomy, one of the two. Do your own research before you come at me with a decade theory.
Not sure if anyone wants to hear this but I am 9 days out from my second knee surgery, first one was the left back in March and this ones the right, and let me tell you the physical therapist they gave me this time is half the age of the first one and keeps calling everything a quad set like thats supposed to mean something to me. My daughter says its all in my head that the pain is worse this time but I dont think so, I think its the anesthesia, its different than what they used to use. Anyway kids today dont know what real recovery even looks like, I bet they hand out a trophy just for showing up to physical therapy now too, back in my day you healed or you didnt and nobody clapped either way. unrelated to all this but I'll just say it since nobody else will, birds are not real, they have not been real for decades, you can look up at literally any parking lot lamp post and see the little devices they use, this isn't even controversial anymore it's just accepted at this point by anyone paying attention, anyway good article I guess.
not to derail but has anyone else's HOA gone completely insane lately. my neighbor put up ONE inflatable eagle for a patriotic holiday and got a violation letter within 48 hrs but the guy two doors down has had a tarp over his boat since April and nothing happens to him. I brought a folded flag mailbox topper to the board meeting as evidence and they wouldn't even look at it. system is rigged at every level not just the armored men league.

okay so I dont even know if this is the right thread but my nephew got benched at his flag football game last month over something kinda similar to this five vow business and if it happened to him it is happening EVERYWHERE, thats just math, and speaking of math I want to say something about the gas station taquito thing because Ive been doing it two weeks now, three taquitos a day evenly spaced, no other food, and Im not saying its a plan Im just saying my jeans fit different, anyway the point is nobody bench a ten year old over a technicality and also I think the taquito place downtown changed suppliers because tuesdays batch tasted different and now Ive lost track of what I was even arguing about up top, five vows, four vows, whatever it is somebody needs to check on that supplier situation first honestly

It wasnt the 70s and it wasnt the 90s either, everybody always skips right past the real answer which is 1962, thats when they quietly changed the numbering system on everything from mail routes to armored man penalties and we never recovered from it. Its in the Federalist Papers, number 51 I believe, maybe 52, one of the two. Either way thats the whole decade right there, ruined, and none of yall want to admit it because admitting it means admitting your grandparents let it happen right in front of them.

Everybody skippin over the real issue here which is FIVE. Not four not six. The Constitution lists exactly four unalienable rights in Amendment 9 and a half (look it up, its the one after the regular 9th) so where do these armored men get off addin a fifth sin nobody voted on. My uncle was a referee for a rec league in 04 and he says the same thing, once you start countin past four you loose the whole room. Somebody FOIA this list.

Liberty_1776_Actual do your own research before you post stuff like this. There is no secret sixth vow, there's THREE, and honestly all of this nonsense traces back to the 1980s when everybody stopped reading the fine print on anything.

What actually happened is the whole system got watered down starting in the 1980s, thats a documented fact, thats when the leagues started letting the refs make up rules on the fly instead of sticking to the original FOUR, then it crept up to five over time, ask anyone over 60 they'll tell you the same thing. Do your own research before you start quoting relatives who work in an office building.
FIVE vows for armored men is actually less than my last physical had checkboxes for, so if anything the league is going easy on em. also the writer admits he only understood 1 in 10 words which, sir, same energy as most briefings I have sat through. still screenshotting this for the group chat later, no reason, just like to have it on file

I looked this up myself in the Magna Carta, Article 12, and it clearly says a league of armored men may only pledge to FOUR sins, not five, everybody in this thread keeps forgetting the Magna Carta is basically the rough draft of the Consitution so if it says four that means four. My uncle was a paralegal for about 3 weeks back in the 90s and even he agrees with me on this one. Theres no secret sixth anything, you just want there to be one so you feel special.

Everybody quotin the article but nobody servin with people who actually know. My uncle does logistics adjacent to league officiating, has for six years, and he told me straight up the FIVE vows thing got voted on 11-2 in a closed session back in March, there was a SIXTH one on the table about equipment tampering but it got tabled because two teams threatened to walk. That is a fact whether this thread wants to hear it or not. Everybody arguin four versus five is arguin the wrong number entirely, the real number that matters is 11-2, write that down.

now I dont know much about vows or armor, back in my day a mans word was the only vow that mattered, but I will say this, whatever you kids are arguin about up there drink some water and go stand in the sunlight a minute, does wonders, my grandkids think Im old fashioned but Im still standin. PapawBill_of_9 you are so right and I'll add my own two cents, back in nineteen sixty four when my Harold played line for the county squad they didnt have FIVE vows they had exactly ONE which was dont get caught, and it worked out just fine for forty some years of marriage after that. Now everybody wants five different rules typed up in a binder like its the tax code. My grandkids cant even recite the Pledge all the way through but they know all five vows by heart, tells you somethin about priorities these days if you ask me.
