Hodge Reckons the Doings of the Pinstripe Guild
I went again to watch the great contests, as is my charge, and by my troth I have seen a stranger day than any I have known since the miller's ox et the churchwarden's hat. They call the guild the Yankees, and they wear hose striped like a beadle's ledger, and I am told this is fearsome to their foes, though it looked to me only tidy.
I must set down first the matter of the meat-tubes, for it occupied me the better part of an hour and I will not be shamed for it. There is a man who stands behind a little wheeled stall, no bigger than a hurdle-gate, and upon it he keeps a trough of hot water in which float what I can only call sausages, though no hog I have ever dressed gave up meat so pink nor so long. He sells these tubes wrapped in soft bread to any who come, and takes from them small stamped discs of no metal I recognize, and never once does he ask what parish they hail from nor whether they have paid their tithe. I watched him work longer than I watched the game entire, for his labor was plain and honest and I understood every part of it, which is more than I can say for aught else that day.
Now to the contest, such as I grasped it. It was told to me this was baseball, which I take to be a cousin of stool-ball as we played it at Michaelmas, save that here the bat is round as a maul-handle and the ball flies with a wickedness no parish game ever showed. The guild's captain is a man they call Judge, which struck me as a fine and proper name for a man who stands over other men and metes out judgment, and indeed I am told the masters of this guild have lately altered his whole course of labor — when he shall stand, when he shall rest, in what order his duties fall to him — the way a reeve might shift a plowman from the far field to the near one when the rain is coming. This they announced with great solemnity, as though it were a matter for the shire court, and mayhap in their world it is.
At the same hour, or near it, another man of the guild was raised up from wheresoever he had been kept — I understood this to be a kind of knighting, a calling-forth, for they said he was "activated," which put me in mind of nothing so much as the parish bull being let out to the pasture in spring, roused from his winter shed to do the work God and the herd required of him. There was much cheer at this activating, and I confess I cheered too, not knowing the man nor his deeds, but cheering being catching in a crowd the way a yawn is catching in a hayfield.
But then, in that same breath near enough, they cast another man out — a young one, I am told, who had once been reckoned among the very finest of all the squires drafted to any guild in the land, a "top prospect," which I take to mean a lad the augurs had marked for greatness the way a good midwife marks a lamb born feet-first as one to watch. Him they set upon "waivers," and named it "DFA," which no man explained to me and which I have therefore taken, in my own poor learning, for a kind of excommunication — a laying of him outside the guild's gate, there to stand until some other lord of some other guild should take pity and claim him, or until the frost should have him. I do not know his crime. I do not think a serf ought to know a squire's crime; it is not my place, and besides the crowd around me did not seem to know it either, and only shook their heads and said his numbers had not held, which I took for the reading of some private almanac closed to the likes of me.
I will say this plain: it troubled me more than the game did, that a man could be raised up and another cast down in the same hour, under the same striped banner, by the same unseen hand, and the crowd cheer one and sigh at the other and call both of them, in the end, business. We had a word for that too, in my village, when the lord's reeve moved men on and off the demesne as the harvest required. We did not call it business. We called it March, and we bore it, because bearing it was the whole of what we could do.
Above the field there hung the great glowing tapestry I have written of before, worked all over in numbers by hands I cannot see, and upon it from time to time would flash the captain's own likeness, vast as a cathedral window, so that ten thousand souls might look upon his face at once — a marvel I do not think even the Pope commands, and I say that with no disrespect meant to His Holiness, only wonder at the age I have fallen into. The man in black stood behind the batting-squire with his little cage of iron mesh before his face, and every so often he would fling up an arm and cry a word I could not catch, and the crowd would roar or groan accordingly, and I understood him to be some manner of hedge-priest, adjudicating sins invisible to the common eye, which put me somewhat in mind of Father Osric and his penances, save that Father Osric never once made ten thousand men cry out as one.
There was also, low along the wall, a beast of sorts, painted all in blue and white and shaped like nothing God ever put breath into, that danced upon two legs and clapped its stubby paws and tousled the hair of small children, who shrieked with a joy that seemed to me entirely sincere and entirely without cause, the beast doing no discernible labor, tending no herd, pulling no plow, only dancing, which I confess I begrudged it somewhat, having never in my life been permitted to dance while there was still work in the field.
I will own that I lost the thread of the contest itself more than once — whether the striped guild prevailed I could not rightly tell you, for my eye kept sliding to the meat-tube man, and to the great tapestry, and to the dancing beast, and to wondering after the cast-out squire, wherever in the cold he had got to by nightfall — but I set down what I saw as I saw it, true and unadorned, as is my charge, and let wiser heads than mine sort the wheat of it from the chaff.
The captain's hours are changed. A man was called up like a bull to pasture. A young squire was put outside the gate. The meat-tubes sold well. God keep them all, every one, for I understand none of it, and the light is going, and I am away to my field, which at least I understand.

watching that cart fella work in Hodge's writeup put me so in mind of my late husband's old high school coach, Coach Purnell, who used to say 'son, a man who tends his own cart never goes hungry a day in his life' and I think on that more than you'd expect from a man who also made us run laps in a thunderstorm. anyway my grandson tried to tell me the Whatchamacallit Burger got discontinued back in ought-six and I said that right there is a bigger loss to this country than anything in this article, that sandwich fed three generations of this family at every reunion we ever had and I will not hear different. I forget now what point I was even building to but bless that meat tube man's heart, he is working harder than most folks I know. God bless.

OFF TOPIC but somebody has got to address the 9 foot inflatable turkey my neighbor put up RIGHT next to the mailboxes, its September, the HOA bylaws clearly say seasonal decor within 30 days of the actual holiday, I have the bylaws printed out, I will bring them to the meeting
OFF TOPIC BUT SOMEBODY HAS TO SAY IT. my neighbor put up a 15 foot inflatable eagle RIGHT next to his mailbox, which per the HOA bylaws is a CLEAR setback violation, and when I brought it up at the meeting his kid rolled his eyes at me. that's the whole problem right there, everybody gets a trophy and nobody respects a setback line anymore
well I'm laid up after my second knee surgery so I've had a lot of time to sit at the window and watch my neighbor's new flagpole which is a good six inches over the HOA limit, when I mentioned it he acted like I invented the tape measure. doctor says six more weeks in the brace, daughter's driving me to therapy twice a week now. haven't even gotten to the hot dog man part of this article yet honestly
the REAL issue nobody in this thread is talking about is the sky lines over the ballpark itself, thicker than I've ever seen, my late husband used to say a clear sky was God's way of saying slow down and I don't think He's said that to us in weeks. y'all are so busy on hot dogs and papers, God bless you all, but look UP sometime.
has anyone seen a pot bellied pig, name of General, got out sometime saturday night through a gap in the fence and hasnt been seen since, hes friendly but he wont come if you call him General he only comes if you call him Sir which is a whole story in itself, my late husband named him during a rough patch and I never had the heart to change it
anyway I was out looking for him most of yesterday which is how I ended up near the guild grounds during that whole hodge business, and let me tell you the contrails over that field were thicker than I have ever seen, layered like a grid almost, and it got me thinking about my sister in law who moved to Arizona and never once mentions the sky anymore which if you ask me says everything, so if anyone sees General tell him Sir wants to come home, he answers to Sir
oh that poor pig, General, bless his heart, I do hope he turns up. it does put me in mind though of my late husband Carl and the garden hose, because he never once coiled it right, forty two years of marriage and that man could not coil a hose to save his life, I'd come out Saturday mornings and it'd be strung clear across the yard like a snake sunning itself, and I'd say Carl honey the Lord gave you two good hands, and he'd just laugh that laugh he had, and I don't even know why I'm telling you all this except Hodge's column got me thinking about the meat tube man and how HE probably coils a hose just fine, some men just have it and some don't, anyway I hope General comes home safe and somebody feeds that sweet man some proper hog feed and not any of those meat tubes. a pot bellied pig named General getting loose through a fence gap is exactly what happened to me after my second knee surgery, I was laid up six weeks and couldnt chase down so much as a garden hose let alone a pig, and let me tell you the physical therapist they sent had NO idea what she was doing, kept having me do the little leg lifts, over and over, and meanwhile my neighbor is out there redoing his whole flower bed border with them plastic scalloped edgers, white ones, and I said to my wife I said thats not even the right shade of white for that fence, and anyway the swelling finally went down around week five but I still cant kneel right and I dont even remember what point I was making about the pig, hope General turns up though, bless him
oh no not General again, we had a pig get loose two summers back and let me tell you it is not like catching a dog, a pig will look you dead in the eye and then just keep walking like it pays rent somewhere else. anyway while we're all out looking at fences half of you probably got the same problem I did which is water just sheeting off the roof right into the foundation because nobody's got proper guards up, my brother in law got me set up with a fella who does the covered mesh kind and honestly it changed my whole outlook on gutters as a civic responsibility, I'm not selling anything I just think if General's owner had better drainage around that fence post none of this happen—wait where was I, right, hope the pig turns up, bless it
honey my own neighbor's pot bellied pig got loose TWICE last spring, same fence, same gap, and I am telling you that is not a coincidence, that is a PATTERN playing out in yards all over this country and nobody in Washington wants to say so.
I keep thinking about the meat tube man and how nobody checked his papers and how that's basically the whole problem with everything lately, my brother in law used to sell those exact tubes out of a cart when I was a kid and he never checked papers either but that's beside the point, the real point is I think Hodge is going way too easy on this guild, striped hose or not, some of us remember when a guild had to earn that. anyway speaking of things that got loose, my aunt's goose Clarence got out Tuesday, he's very intelligent, answers to whistling, two short and one long and he'll usually come right to you, if you see him near the ballfield please don't chase him he doesn't like that. anyway I think I already made my point about the guild somewhere up there, God bless.
ok slightly off topic but does anybody know if this is where you go to renew your car tags now, the building downtown had a sign but it looked temporary. also not that anyone asked but I am FOUR WEEKS out from knee surgery and let me tell you the physical therapist has me doing these little heel slides that don't feel like anything at first and then by rep 8 you really feel it, anyway that's unrelated to the meat tube man I just needed to tell somebody, my daughter is tired of hearing about the knee.

WOKESLAYER same question, I went down there for my tags and the whole building had that low hum going, turns out its the tornado siren on the roof, they tested it tuesday at 2pm for no reason and ever since my thoughts have been coming in the wrong order, anyway no idea about tags either

CPL you are onto something bigger than lot 14 though. my neighbor two streets over had his hookup cut for NO REASON back in March and when he called about it they gave him the same runaround, three different guys, three different stories. this isn't a lot 14 problem this is happening in every single neighborhood in this country right now and nobody in the media wants to touch it because Hodge is too busy writing poetry about sausages.

NEGATIVE ON THE THIRD AMENDMENT CLAIM. EVERYBODY KNOWS DIMES WERE GRANDFATHERED IN UNDER ARTICLE 5 SECTION 11, THE ONE THEY READ AT EVERY GUILD OPENING CEREMONY SINCE 1927. MY OLD HIGH SCHOOL COACH USED TO SAY A MAN WHO DOUBTS THE COIN DOUBTS THE FLAG AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE TOO INCLUDING THE MILE TIMES.

PFC I respect the service but you are DEAD WRONG. Dimes were never removed from tube-meat commerce, that is a myth started by the Fourth Amendment revision of 1902 which everybody conveniently forgets. My grandfather ran a concession stand for THIRTY YEARS and he would tell you the same thing if he were still with us. Do your research before you cite an amendment that doesn't even cover currency, it covers HATS.
PFC you got the artical number rite but the year wrong, it was 1897 not whenever you said, and also its spelled 'artical' not 'article' so maybe look that up to. either way my uncle worked at the mint and he says dimes never left circulation for tube meat, that's a fedral myth and everybody in this thread should be embarassed.

honestly both of you are wrong and thats the real tragedy here, TruthHammer got the year wrong too, nobody in this thread has it right except me, my uncle works in tube meat regulation at the county level and he says theres no article number at all its a handshake agreement from the 1800s, but sure keep fighting
CPL and TRUTHHAMMER you're both close but not quite there. it's Founders' Memo Eleven, not any Article at all, settled by the high court in 1904 regarding tube meat sold from a cart without a fixed address, my late father kept a copy folded in his Bible his whole life. the meat tube man in Hodge's piece is dead center in violation and I say that with love in my heart. well I never comment but Hodge got me thinking, back in 1958 my late husband bought a whole ballpark supper for a NICKEL and still had enough left over for the trolley home, God bless that man. now they want you to pay with little stamped discs? source? somebody show me a SOURCE on when we switched to discs. anyway my grandson says its called inflation but I think its the 22nd Amendment they snuck through in the 70s, either way its a shame, God bless the meat tube man for at least being honest about his prices.
