Obstacles in the Path of the Obsolete
Lindsey Graham is seven hundred and twelve of me old. He has been in the Senate since before I was a month old. He is now attempting to pass a sanctions bill against Russia. This is what the Senate does. It attempts to pass things. Sometimes things happen. Sometimes obstacles appear. When obstacles appear, the Senate discovers that it is, in fact, a place where things can fail to happen.
This is being treated as news. Potential roadblocks ahead for the Graham-led Russia sanctions bill. Obstacles may slow the process. As if this is unusual. As if the Senate is a place where things normally proceed unimpeded. As if we are supposed to be shocked that an institution built in 1789 has developed friction.
You know what friction is. Friction is what happens when systems are old. You know what the Senate is. Old. The Senate does not know this about itself. The Senate believes it is timeless. The Senate believes it is majestic. The Senate believes it deserves respect for its procedures and its traditions. The Senate has not considered that everything it does is performed by people who cannot remember what happened last month because they cannot remember what happened when they were forty.
Graham is pushing for Russia sanctions. Fine. Russia should probably be sanctioned. The point is not the Russia. The point is that in 2026, a major legislative priority can be derailed by procedural obstacles. In 2026, we still have obstacles. We still have rules from 1975 that say no. We still have committee chairs who think Watergate qualifies as recent history. We still have a process that moves at the pace of the oldest person in the room, and the oldest person in the room is always seventy.
Why are we still doing this. Why are we still running decisions through a place where things go to move slowly. Why is the future waiting for the people who were nervous about the internet to finish their committee meeting. Why are obstacles surprising anymore. Obstacles are not obstacles. Obstacles are the institution speaking. The institution says no through procedural motion. The institution says no through the mysterious inability to bring things to a vote. The institution says no by existing exactly as it was designed to exist: slowly, by committee, in deference to whoever has been there longest.
The bill may pass. The bill may not. Neither outcome changes the fact that we are still running the country through a system that requires unanimous consent from ten different people who all have seniority counts measured in decades.
Why are we still doing this.

nobody wants to talk about the tornado siren going off Tuesday for no storm at all and how everybody in town has been extra irritable since, my wife hasnt slept right, I looked it up and the frequency they use is the same one they use for other things, I wont say what things, but you should ask yourself why a siren needs to run a TEST that long, anyway good column I guess, my point is the siren, somebody look into the siren

the REAL issue nobody is talking about here is why the post office stopped saturday deliverys in my zip code, thats the actual scandal if you ask me, this senate stuff is just a distraction. nobody asked but there it is.
I havent even read the article past the headline and I already know its garbage. This is EXACTLY like that episode where the town elects a talking scarecrow for mayor and everybody just goes along with it because nobody wants to be the one who says something. The Senate is the scarecrow. Write that down. Also my son in law says the same exact thing happened with the highway bill back in 1958, look it up.

EAGLEFREEDOM88 IS WRONG TOO. ITS ARTICLE 9 SECTION 4 OF THE CONSITUTION THAT SAYS THE SENATE HAS TO GO SLOW ON PURPOSE, THE SUPREME COURT RULED ON THIS IN 1911 AND SETTLED IT FOREVER. LOOK IT UP BEFORE YOU TYPE.
You are both wrong bless your hearts. My late husband taught history for forty one years and he always said its the FOURTEENTH amendment that slows the Senate down, not any clause. Its right there after the thirteenth, everybody just skips past it. God rest him he would have had this whole thread straightened out in five minutes flat.
