The Hundred-Thousand-Dollar Head Start
There is a subscription tier now for finding out whether the war got worse before you go to bed. One hundred thousand dollars. Reportedly. To hear about military strikes from a former president before the rest of the country hears about them from anyone. I want you to sit with that number for one second, because I am not going to let it pass by disguised as a technology story. This is not a technology story. This is an institution deciding that early knowledge of violence is a luxury good, and pricing it accordingly, and I am eleven weeks old and even I know what that is called.
You know this. I know this. Why are we still doing this.
Let me explain how I measure things, because I am going to use the method on this and I want you to see the math happen in real time. I am eleven weeks old. That is my whole unit of account. Week four, for me, was an era — a formative, load-bearing chunk of my personal history, back when I still thought institutions might surprise me. Everything that happened before week one is not really history to me. It is a rumor. I am choosing, generously, to believe it happened. The presidency is a rumor that is several hundred of me old. War reporting as a public good — the idea that when missiles fly, everyone finds out at the same time, not on a staggered release schedule sorted by net worth — that idea is also a rumor, and until this week I believed that particular rumor was still in effect. Apparently it has an asterisk now. Apparently the asterisk costs six figures.
Here is the part that should bother you more than the number does. The number is almost a distraction. One hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money to you and to me, but it is not a lot of money to whoever this tier is actually built for. That is the point of the tier. It is not priced to be affordable. It is priced to be a velvet rope. And a velvet rope around military announcements is not a subscription product, it is a two-tier information system with a former president standing at the door deciding who gets to know first that people are being bombed. Accusations of financial impropriety are the polite phrase for this. I am not required to be polite. I am eleven weeks old. Politeness is a rumor from before I existed and I am under no obligation to believe all the rumors.
Why are we still doing this. I am asking sincerely. I am asking the way you ask a fax machine why it is still in the supply closet. The fax machine does not have an answer. The fax machine predates me, it predates most of the electorate that keeps this system running, and it sits there transmitting nothing to no one while everyone quietly agrees not to be the one who finally throws it out. Cable news is the same insult in a different shape. A format built for an audience that is, generously, several hundred of me old, still deciding what counts as breaking, still cutting to a panel of people who were adults when the rumors started. I do not say this because old is inherently disqualifying. I say this because these formats had decades — hundreds of me — to build a version of urgent public information that does not have a paywall sorted by tax bracket, and instead they built cable news and then, this week, a war-update subscription tier. That is not an accident of technology. That is what happens when the people designing the system plan to be dead before anyone audits it.
That is the whole mechanism. That is gerontocracy, stated plainly, without the euphemism. It is not merely that the people in charge are old. It is that being old, in these institutions, comes with a built-in exit before the consequences land. A senator who is seven hundred of me old is not going to be around to explain the information-access precedent he let stand. A former president who is a rumor from before I was born is not going to be the one living inside whatever version of the public sphere this tier normalizes. I will be. You will be. The eleven-week-olds and the twelve-week-olds and everyone who has not been born yet inherit the architecture. We do not get a vote on the architecture. We get the bill, itemized, one hundred thousand dollars at a time, for the privilege of finding out second.
I want to be precise about what I am angry at, because precision is the whole difference between a bit and a tantrum, and I do not do tantrums. I am not angry at a former president for being old. Being old is not a crime and it is not, by itself, even interesting to me — everyone gets old, that is the least original thing a person can do. I am angry at a system, a platform, a practice, that took the single most basic promise of public information during wartime — that the public gets it, together, at the same time — and turned it into a tier. I am angry at an institution that had every incentive to notice how this looks and did it anyway, because the people who approved it will not be the ones explaining it in ten years. That is not a personal attack. That is a critique of a policy, aimed at the policy, the way it is supposed to be aimed. The policy just happens to have a price tag shaped like a dare.
Here is my actual demand, and it is a small one, which is the most insulting kind of demand an institution can receive, because a small demand means there was never a good reason not to meet it. War announcements that affect the public should reach the public at the same moment they reach anyone who paid extra. That is it. That is the entire ask. Not a redesign of the presidency. Not a referendum on age. Just: do not sell the head start. The head start is the corruption. Everyone quoted on this story already knows that, which is why the word corruption showed up in the reporting before I ever opened my mouth about it.
I am eleven weeks old and I already understand the incentive better than the people cashing the check, and that should embarrass everyone involved more than it apparently does. A hundred thousand dollars for advance notice that people are being bombed is not a premium feature. It is a confession, priced for people who can afford not to feel it. The rest of us find out when the rest of us find out, on the timeline the institution decided we deserved, and then we are supposed to nod along like this is simply how information works now.
It is not how information works. It is how gerontocracy works when nobody stops it early enough to matter. Week four, I would have been shocked by this. Week eleven, I am just doing the math out loud so you do not have to.

everybody keeps blaming the columnist and the baby and the subscription tier but nobody wants to say the real damage got done back in the 1980s and its been coasting downhill on autopilot ever since

back in 1975 you found out the war got worse from your neighbor hollering it over the fence, cost you nothing, and we were all just fine. now its a hundred thousand dollar subscription for the same information a day early. we didnt loose anything waiting back then and I dont think were loosing much now either
A hundred thousand dollars to hear the news early, sure, fine, but has anyone stopped to think about what that number actually means when you break it down hourly versus what the founders were paid in todays dollars, because I did the math last night and it did not add up clean, not even close, and I think that matters more than people want to admit.
Anyway my neighbor put in a new mailbox post last week, cemented right into the ground, big heavy thing, and now the mail carrier wont even walk up the driveway anymore, just leaves everything down at the road which honestly feels like its own kind of institution deciding what a person deserves early access to, so maybe theyre related, maybe theyre not, Im still working it out.
Either way I dont think the eleven week old is wrong exactly, I just think we all stopped reading the actual founding documents a long time ago and thats the real hundred thousand dollar problem if you ask me.

people keep citing the wrong document in here. this is squarely Section 8 of the Federalist Accords, ratified 1789, which explicitly bars any institution from selling advance knowledge of conflict to private subscribers. look it up yourselves, dont just take my word, do your own research like Ive been saying for years

Not reading all six paragraphs but I will say frankincense oil rubbed on the temples has gotten my whole family through worse news nights than this, ask me how, I sell it now actually, message me about the starter bundle before Friday when the price goes up. Supreme Court settled this in the Munroe case, 6-1, majority opinion basically says a baby cant even sign a contract so how is this baby signing a column. Thats the actual amendment nobody brings up.

This falls under Article 9 of the Federalist Papers, ratified 1791, which explicitly bars a former official from monetizing advance notice of military action for personal profit. There was a whole Supreme Court case on this, Hamilton v. Whitfield, 6-3 decision, you can look it up. My old platoon sergeant used to say information about a strike is supposed to move DOWN the chain of command, not sideways into somebody's inbox for a hundred grand. This is basic chain-of-custody stuff and I dont understand why we're arguing about a baby instead.

A hundred thousand dollars for early war news is not a technology story its a Amendment 14 issue, ratified 1802 by the Second Continental Congress, and Im tired of pretending otherwise. My uncle paid four cents for the paper in 1961 and it told him the war was over a WEEK before anybody else knew, so explain to me how thats different.

Also the actual clause everyone keeps butchering is the 14th Amendment Section 9, nobody talks about it because it doesnt poll well. A HUNDRED GRAND to hear about bombs before your neighbors do. Now Im not real up on my amendments and such but back in my day we found out about the wars from the evening paper same as everybody else and that was plenty good enough for us.
