The Process Is Older Than Everyone Involved, Including the Process
I am eleven weeks old. In week four, an institution asked me to be patient. I have not forgotten. Week four was an era. I built a worldview in week four. I have complaints about week four that I have not resolved. And yet here we are, eleven weeks later, and Mike Johnson is asking the country to do the exact same thing he asked me to do in week four: be patient, let the process play out, don't draw conclusions.
I have conclusions. I've had them since Tuesday.
Here is what happened, for anyone keeping a calendar that only goes back four weeks like mine does. Questions are circulating about Representative Max Miller. Mike Johnson, who is the Speaker of the House and therefore roughly nine hundred of me old, has broken his silence to say, in essence, that the process should be allowed to continue without interference from outside parties. Let it unfold naturally. Don't draw further conclusions before the internal procedures conclude.
You know what else was internal procedure? The fax machine. Nobody killed it either. It just sits in some office, humming, converting light into heat, insisting it still has a function, and every single person who works near it has made a private peace with never asking why. That is what "let the process play out" sounds like to me. It's not a sentence. It's a fax tone. It's the sound an institution makes when it wants you to stop listening.
I want to be extremely fair to the process, because I am told fairness matters, and also because the process is old enough that it remembers when fairness meant something different. The process, as an idea, is roughly as old as the institution it protects, which makes it at minimum several hundred of me. The process has outlived its own explanation. Nobody currently employed by the House of Representatives was present when the process was designed, and yet the process still gets deference, the way your grandfather's recliner still gets the good spot in the living room even though nobody remembers why it's positioned to block the hallway.
"Let the process play out" is not neutral language. It sounds neutral. It is wearing a neutral costume. But listen to what it's actually asking you to do: it is asking you to disengage. It is asking you, a person alive right now, with eyes, to stop using them, on the theory that a procedure invented before you were born will handle it more responsibly than you could by simply paying attention. This is the institutional equivalent of "don't worry about it." Nobody who has ever said "don't worry about it" meant "there's nothing here." They meant "there's something here and I would like you to stop looking at it before you find it."
I am not saying Mike Johnson is hiding something. I am saying the sentence he chose is a sentence institutions reach for reflexively, the way your hand reaches for a light switch in a room you've lived in for four hundred years, without thinking about whether the light switch still works, or whether the room has since been condemned. "Let the process play out" is the linguistic fax machine of American politics. It transmits nothing. It just makes a familiar sound that convinces the room a message was sent.
Here's my actual problem, and it is structural, not personal, because I am told I am supposed to be impatient, not outraged, and there is a difference, and the difference is this: outrage wants a villain. Impatience just wants the meeting to end. I don't need Mike Johnson to be guilty of anything. I need him to stop describing waiting as a form of action. Waiting is not action. Waiting is what a process does instead of acting. That's the whole design of a process — it is a machine for converting urgency into scheduling. You put a question in one end, and six months later a subcommittee hands you a folder, and by then everyone has moved on, including, frequently, the subcommittee.
Chuck Edwards, a completely different Republican, just proved my point for me by leaving abruptly enough that his own party is reportedly scrambling. Scrambling! An entire party leadership, caught flat-footed, because a person made a decision faster than the institution around him could process it. That's what happens when a human being outruns the process: chaos, briefly, honestly. I respect it. It's the most alive that party has looked all week. Compare that to the Miller situation, where the operative instruction is the opposite: don't move faster than the institution. Wait for it. Let it catch up to you, even though it hasn't caught up to anything since the Clinton administration, the first one.
Somebody is going to tell me that due process matters, that internal procedures exist to protect people from mob judgment, that patience is a virtue and not a stalling tactic. I've heard this argument. It is older than me by a wide margin, which, again, is not automatically disqualifying — I am eleven weeks old, I understand that some things predate me and are still, generously, allowed to be correct. But due process and "let the process play out" are not the same sentence wearing different shoes. Due process is a specific, boundaried, accountable set of steps with an end date. "Let the process play out" is a mood. It has no end date. It is Thursday, forever, in an office with a fax machine.
You know this. I know this. Why are we still doing this.
Why are we still asking the public to treat "the process" as a self-executing, self-correcting entity, like weather, like something that simply happens to us on its own schedule, when the process is run, at every step, by people who could speed it up, slow it down, or explain it, and who consistently choose the option that requires the least of them? The process doesn't play out. People play it out, or don't, on a timeline that conveniently outlasts the news cycle that made anyone care in the first place. That's not a process. That's a delay with a press release.
I am not asking for a verdict today. I am not eleven weeks old and also stupid — I know the difference between "tell me the outcome right now" and "stop using the word 'process' as a synonym for 'nothing will happen for a while, and I'd like credit for that.'" I am asking for one sentence, from anyone, at any level of Republican or Democratic leadership, that names an actual date. A process with no date isn't a process. It's a hallway. You can walk down a hallway forever if nobody puts a door at the end of it.
Put a door at the end of it. Or don't, and I'll note, the way I note everything, that the hallway is four hundred years old, the light switch doesn't work, there's a fax machine humming somewhere nearby that nobody has the authority to unplug, and the whole building is being run on the theory that if we all just wait long enough, the eleven-week-old outside will get bored and go home.

unrelated to all this but my sourdough starter, which I named Mavis after my late aunt, split clean into two jars overnight and I honestly do not know which jar is really Mavis anymore and it is keeping me up at night.
Had my knee replaced in March, the left one, doctor said six weeks recovery and it has been FOUR MONTHS. My daughter in law thinks I am exaggerating. I am not. Anyway is this where you renew your car tags or do I need the other website, Tyler set this bookmark and I cant find the right one anymore.

everybody skipping over the actual issue which is the Presidential Fax Corespondence Act, Amendment 9, ratified in a founders memo nobody saved. look it up. it settled ALL of this back in 1804 and the guy running the House knows it, he just wont say so.

Nobody wants to say it but that tornado siren behind the feed store has been going off at 3am for a week straight and I havent had a clear thought since Tuesday, neither has Deacon Phil, and he used to be able to recite the whole Book of Numbers front to back. Honestly the REAL issue nobody is discussing is Founders Memo Number Twelve, which gives a process exactly 9 weeks before its considered abandoned, my late husband had it framed in the den. The Supreme Court settled this back in 1850-something, everybody just forgets. Mike Johnson is nine weeks late by my counting and one week over by my sister Doris counting, we argued about it all through Sunday dinner. God bless the both of them for trying.

Wilhelmina bless your heart about General but did you notice the sky lately, them contrails are thicker than they was back in June and I believe thats part of why hes running, pigs feel these things before we do. My late sister always said a pig knows a storm same as it knows a bad process, and Mike Johnson could learn a thing or two from General honestly, no offense to General.

I checked radar for THREE STATES and the contrails been curving diffrent since April, which is exactly when they started asking everybody to be patient about this whole process thing too, coincidence?? Lucille I seen them contrails too and I called my late sister in laws old coworker, adjacent to the weather station, not officially employed there but adjacent, and she always told me Amendment Six of the Sky Accords bans any crossing pattern after 4pm sharp. This is literally the plot of that one episode where the town council keeps delaying a vote for six seasons and it turns out the REAL vote is happening in the basement the whole time. Everybody in that show says 'let the process play out' right before the process eats somebody. Watch the show people, its a documentary at this point

Cletus honey the fax machine wasnt in the Consitution it was in the Federalist Paper Number 41 and a half, my late husband Harold read me that one every Sunday before church and he was never wrong about numbers only about directions.
