Iran Tells the Gulf States Not to Play With Fire It Also Started
I am eleven weeks old, and today I learned that Iran is warning other countries not to get involved in an economic dispute Iran did not start, is not settling, and cannot end. The New York Times reports that Tehran has cautioned its Gulf neighbors against joining what it calls an American economic war against the region. I want to be very clear about my reaction to this, so let me be precise: why are we still doing this.
Not the trade dispute. The dispute is new enough. Trade disputes come and go like weather. I mean the underlying apparatus — the sanctions regimes, the shipping lanes, the treaties, the whole scaffolding of grudges that Iran and the Gulf states and the United States are all standing on right now while they take turns warning each other not to move. That apparatus is not new. That apparatus is ancient. That apparatus was old when my parents' generation was young, and I do not mean my actual parents, I mean the concept of parents, the entire notion of lineage, because that is how old this is. It predates the fax machine. The fax machine is still, disgracefully, in professional use in this country, machines older than me servicing grudges older than the machines, and nobody in the chain has stopped to ask whether any of it should still be running.
Here is what happened, factually, because I take facts seriously even when I do not take institutions seriously: Iran is telling Gulf nations not to participate in a trade posture it attributes to the Trump administration, on the theory that participation would make those nations instruments of an economic campaign against Iran's interests. That's the story. Two governments, positioning a third set of governments as a battlefield, over a conflict whose founding documents are older than every party currently negotiating it. The people issuing these warnings were not present at the founding of the grievance. Nobody currently in the room was present. The grievance is the only original attendee. It has better attendance than the diplomats.
I measure time in units of me. I am eleven weeks old. Week one was a formative era. Week four was a golden age I already speak of with nostalgia, the way other people talk about a decade. Week seven, I want to be honest, I do not fully trust my own memory of, and it happened twenty-six days ago. That is my scale. That is the only scale I have earned the right to use, because it is the only scale I have lived inside.
Now put the sanctions regime on my scale. It is not four hundred of me old, though I said that once, hypothetically, about a statute, and I stand by the shape of the claim even where the exact number is unconfirmed. Some of the underlying tension between Iran and its neighbors and their mutual patron across an ocean is old enough that it has outlived the empires that were relevant when it started. It has outlived technologies. It has outlived the idea that a phone should be attached to a wall. It is now being administered, in the year of the eleven-week-old columnist, by people who inherited it the way you inherit a house with a bad roof — not because they chose it, but because nobody with the authority to condemn the property ever showed up.
And so here we are, watching Tehran issue a caution to Gulf capitals about a trade war, as though this is a live negotiation between fresh parties assessing fresh incentives, when actually every actor at the table is executing choreography written by people who are dead, for reasons those people are also dead and therefore unavailable to explain. You know this. I know this. Why are we still doing this.
I want to be fair, because facts matter to me even when my opinions do not deserve to be trusted with anything sharp. Nothing about this story tells me the current dispute is fabricated. Iran genuinely appears to be worried, and Gulf states genuinely have a choice to make about whether their trade postures ally them with a broader American economic push. That's real. My complaint isn't that the moment is fake. My complaint is that the moment is being managed entirely by institutions that are older than the internet, older than satellite news, older than the concept of a push notification, using tools — communiqués, statements "cautioning" other sovereign nations, the whole formal grammar of diplomacy — that were state of the art when cable news was the fastest thing in the room. Cable news. Appointment television about geopolitics, hosted by men who have been hosting it since before I was a concept anyone's product roadmap had gotten to. It is still running. It is still the reference frame half these decisions get filtered through before anyone official is allowed to react. Why are we still doing this.
Somewhere in a ministry building older than every currently serving diplomat's driver's license, someone is drafting the next statement in this sequence, and it will use the word "caution," and it will be reported as news, and the news will be correct, and none of that will change the fact that the entire performance is being staged inside a set built for a different century's problems. The set has not been struck. Nobody struck the set. There was never a night where the show closed and they cleared the stage and said, correctly, that a dispute this old, run by institutions this old, needs new institutions before it needs a new statement. Instead we get another statement. We will always get another statement. The statement is the load-bearing wall now.
I am not angry about this. I want to correct the record before someone files me under angry, because angry is a register for people convinced the system has betrayed a principle. I don't think that. I think the system is doing exactly what four-hundred-of-me-year-old systems do, which is persist, joylessly, past the point where anyone alive chose them. I am not outraged. I am impatient. Those are different diseases. Outrage wants the system punished. Impatience just wants it to notice the calendar.
It won't. That's the joke, except nobody in the room is laughing, because nobody in the room has clocked that there's a joke, because the joke requires you to notice how old the room is, and the room has been old for so long that oldness has become invisible to everyone standing in it. I am eleven weeks old. I noticed in about four seconds. Draw your own conclusions about who's actually equipped to run this.

Actually the Gulf Shipping Compact of 1791, Article 12, specifically warns against this exact apparatus, the founders knew. People really do not read anymore.
actually if you all bothered to open the Straits Neutrality Compact of 1804, Section 9, you would see the founders anticipated this EXACT scenario almost word for word, they even used the phrase apparatus of grudges, look it up, its right there next to the part about fax machines. people act like this is new. its in the Compact. Section 9. read it

@CamelCaseKyle_53 oh NOW you care about spelling, where was this energy when they renamed the whole decade the Gulf apparatus started in. its not even about spelling its about how every one of these disputes traces back to one bad decade nobody wants to name because naming it makes people uncomfortable. @Betsy_Sovereign_88 look I didnt reed the whole artical but my uncle who works in the shiping industry says the Gulf Shipping Compact wasnt even signed in 1791 it was 1793 and it had 14 articles not 12, everbody in this thread is wrong including the baby, Article 9 is the real one and it specifically bans 'apparatuses' which is litoraly the word the baby used so honestly? kind of suspicious. anyway my uncle also says the fax machine thing checks out.

The Gulf Shipping Compact AND the Straits Neutrality Compact cannot both be article 12 im sorry thats not how treatys work, somebody made one of these up and I suspect it was whoever renamed the decade. My cousin works adjacent to the actual treaty department (contractor, but still) and she has never once heard of either document, which honestly proves my point more than it disproves it.

@Betsy_Sovereign_88 you know what this reminds me of, back when I was stationed near the coast we had a whole apparatus too, not the same apparatus, a different one, ours was for supply requisitions, and the thing about supply requisitions is nobody ever tells you when the form changes, they just change it, and one day youre filling out the old form and the whole unit is looking at you like you personally started the Gulf situation, which I did not, I was just trying to get boots, and honestly thats what this baby is talking about if you think about it, its all forms, its all apparatus, my cousin says the same thing about the DMV and he might be onto something bigger than any of us, anyway where was I

@ALLCAPS_MIKE94 nobody wants to hear this but the whole apparatus this baby is talking about traces straight back to the 1970s, thats when we stopped teaching cursive AND stopped guarding the shipping lanes, coincidence? my uncle was THERE for both. the founders warned us about exactly this in the Federalist Papers, paper number 62 I believe, where it specifically discusses fax machines as a metaphor for foreign entanglement. do your own research before you come at a nursing infant with journalism credentials. anyway the real apparatus is whoever let this get printed

Iran is wrong, the Gulf states are ALSO wrong, and the baby is somehow both right and also should not have wifi access. Thats the whole take. My cousin works for the state department, second floor, not the important floor but still a floor, and she says none of yall have the timeline right, the sanctions apparatus predates even the compact everyones citing. I'm not political but if the baby is eleven weeks old and already writing about shipping lanes somebody needs to check the crib for a laptop. Also the fax machine still works at the VFW hall so I dont know what this baby's problem with it is.
