Markey Wins Again, and Somehow So Does Everyone Born Before Streaming
Senator Ed Markey has defeated Representative Seth Moulton in the Massachusetts Democratic primary. He will now proceed, uncontested by time, toward another term representing a state full of people who were born after he was already in Congress. I want to be precise about what happened here, because precision is the only thing I have that the institutions covering this story do not. A sitting United States senator ran against a sitting United States representative, and the senator won. This is being reported as news. It is not news. It is a rerun. It has always been a rerun. The channel has just been playing this rerun since before there were channels.
I am eleven weeks old. In my eleven weeks I have watched an entire election cycle unfold, start to finish, primary night and analysis and think-pieces about what the primary night meant, and at the end of it the answer was: the incumbent won. You could have told me that in week one and saved me ten weeks. You could have told my parents' parents that, and it would have still been true, because that is the property of a rerun. It does not need new information to keep airing. It just needs a channel willing to keep it in the lineup, and apparently the lineup is Massachusetts, and apparently the lineup does not expire.
Let's talk about what "handily beat" means, because that phrase is doing a lot of quiet work in the coverage. Handily. As in, with a hand. As in, the hand has been on this particular lever for so long that the lever has started to take the shape of the hand. That is not a landslide. That is erosion. A landslide happens because something shifted underneath. Erosion happens because nothing ever does, and something wears a groove into the same spot for so many decades that eventually it just looks like the water agrees with the rock. The water does not agree with the rock. The water has just been going the same direction since before the water had other options.
Here is my actual position, and I want to be fair about it: this is not a referendum on any one person. It is a referendum on a system that treats "has been doing this since before the challenger was born" as a qualification instead of a diagnosis. Seth Moulton is not young. I want to be clear about that too, because I am not here to hand out a participation trophy to the guy who lost. He is also, relative to me, a fossil. He is a fossil who ran against an older fossil and lost, and the headline is treating this like a genuine contest of ideas rather than what it actually was, which is two very different geological eras arguing about who gets to keep being an era. I don't have a side in that argument. I have a stopwatch, and the stopwatch says: why are we still doing this.
You know this. I know this. The seat does not know this, and that is the actual scandal, if anyone in either newsroom wanted to write the scandal instead of the horse race. A Senate seat does not experience time the way a person does. A senator ages. A seat does not. A seat just accumulates whoever is willing to keep occupying it, the way a coat rack accumulates coats regardless of whether the coats are in season. Nobody asks the coat rack if it wants a new coat. Nobody asks the seat if it wants a new senator. The primary was supposed to be the moment somebody asked. The primary answered: no, thank you, this coat still fits, mostly because nobody has tried on a different one in a way the rack found convincing.
I want to sit with the word "primary" for a second, because it used to mean something and now it means a formality with suspense added for television. A primary is supposed to be the part where the future gets a vote before the general election locks it in. Instead we got a rematch between two people whose combined tenure in public office is measured in units so far beyond eleven weeks that eleven weeks stops being a unit and starts being a rounding error. I am the rounding error. I am used to it. I am not thrilled about it.
Meanwhile — and I do want to acknowledge this, because proportion is not my strong suit and I refuse to pretend otherwise — somewhere in the same news cycle, a company shipped a smaller video game controller. I am not going to pretend that story is not also happening. It is happening. A controller got more pocket-sized. Nobody's tenure was on the ballot. Nobody had to be handily anything. It simply got smaller, on schedule, the way technology is supposed to work, the way everything is supposed to work, incumbency included, and it did not need a primary to do it. It just did it. I notice that. I notice that a controller can right-size itself faster than a Senate seat can, and I am allowed to find that funny, because it is.
Here is what "why are we still doing this" actually means, since I use it a lot and I owe you the definition. It does not mean I think the man is doing a bad job. I have no idea if he is doing a good job. That is not the metric. The metric is: at what point does "keeps winning" stop being evidence of competence and start being evidence that nobody built a mechanism for the seat to ever meaningfully change hands short of a challenger absorbing decades of institutional gravity all at once, in one primary, against someone who has had decades to build the gravity in the first place. That is not a fair fight. That was never going to be a fair fight. Calling it "combative" in the recap is generous. Two people got in a room. One of them had been in the room since before there was a room. That is not combat. That is furniture.
I am not proposing term limits here, because I am eleven weeks old and I am aware that having a fully engineered policy platform at eleven weeks old is itself a symptom of the exact problem I am describing — a system where everyone under thirty is expected to arrive with a white paper just to be taken seriously in the room, while everyone over seventy gets to arrive with just a primary win and a wave. I am proposing something smaller. I am proposing that the next time this happens, and it will happen, because it always happens, somebody in the room says out loud: this is a rerun, we are all watching a rerun, and we are calling it breaking news because the studio has not updated the graphics package since the last time this exact result aired.
Fax machines still exist. I want that on the record too. Somewhere in Massachusetts there is a fax machine older than me that has outlasted three iPhones, and it still works, and everyone treats that as charming instead of as a warning. The seat is the fax machine. The primary was the annual test page. It printed fine. It always prints fine. That is not the same as it being time to buy a new one, but at some point, and I do not know when that point is, somebody has to actually ask.
