On the Target Costume Incident, Or: Why Does Anyone Own a Costume at All
One does try to keep abreast of current events, if only so one has something to say to Mummy over the telephone on Sundays, and this week the newspapers were absolutely *aflutter* about a costume. A Halloween costume. At Target. I confess I had to have it explained to me twice, because my first assumption — reasonable, I think — was that "Target" was some sort of new members' club, possibly in the Hamptons, possibly with a waitlist, and that the costume in question had caused a scene at a black-tie fitting. It was only on the second explanation that I understood Target is a *shop*. A shop that regular people go *into*. On purpose. To *buy things they intend to wear themselves*, rather than have selected for them and laid out on the bed by someone whose entire professional purpose is knowing one's collar size.
I sat with that for a while, you know? Because once you really absorb it — that there exists a whole category of person who walks into a large humming building with a shopping cart the way one might walk into a party, no invitation, no help, just wandering the aisles hunting for a *costume* — the actual controversy becomes almost beside the point. The scandal isn't the costume. The scandal is the *cart*.
But fine. The particulars, as I understand them from the coverage, are these: Target sold a costume, people found the costume offensive, there was what the papers call "backlash," and Target apologized and presumably removed the item, the way one removes a stain, briskly, with a little practiced regret. And I want to be extremely fair to everyone involved, because fairness costs nothing and Father always said generosity of spirit is the one luxury even he can't buy more of. So: fair enough. If a costume upset people, Target was right to apologize. One does hate a scene.
What I cannot get past — and I've turned it over and over, the way one turns over a hors d'oeuvre one suspects of being previously frozen — is the sheer *effort* embedded in the entire premise. These people had to go to a store. They had to select, from a rack, among strangers, a costume representing an idea of themselves they wished to present to the world for one evening. And then — this is the part that truly undoes me — they had to put it on themselves. With their own hands. No fitting. No one standing behind them with pins in their mouth murmuring about the drape of the shoulder. Just a person, alone, in what I can only assume is a modestly sized bedroom, wrestling with a costume they purchased for currency they had personally *earned*, for the privilege of pretending, for one night, to be someone else.
One does wonder why the pretending is necessary at all. I have never once needed a costume to be someone else, because I have never once needed to be anyone but exactly who I am, and I mean that with the warmest possible spirit — truly, you know? — but it does rather explain the whole Halloween industry once you look at it that way. It's not a holiday. It's a pressure valve. It's the one night a year the poors get to dress as though they, too, might be interesting, and then Target — bless them, they really are *trying* — hands them a costume that turns out to have offended someone else who was also, presumably, shopping alone, in the same aisle, with the same cart, hunting the same pressure valve. And then there's a whole *thing*, and an apology, and everyone goes back to being who they actually are, which is, I gather, the exhausting default state for most of the population three hundred and sixty-four days a year.
I raised this with Father over the weekend, the whole affair, and he listened with his usual patience — he really is a marvelous listener, when the topic doesn't involve his golf handicap — and he said, "Cynthia, some people don't have someone to simply *handle* it for them," and I said yes, precisely, that is exactly my point, thank you for understanding so quickly. Because that's the piece nobody in the coverage seems to want to say plainly. These people are managing their *own* costumes. Their own offense. Their own apologies, presumably, when they're the ones doing the offending. There's no one upstream absorbing any of it on their behalf. It must be *exhausting*, existing at that altitude, where a costume can actually reach you.
One simply doesn't have costume problems once someone else is sourcing the costume. I say this not to boast — Father always says boasting is common, and he's right, it really is — but as a genuine, structural observation: the entire controversy evaporates the moment a person is no longer the one standing in the aisle. Mrs. Fenwick-Aldous handles all of that for me, and I've never so much as seen a costume before it's already on a hanger in my room with a note about the theme of the evening, and in eleven years there has never once been what the papers would call "backlash," because Mrs. Fenwick-Aldous has never once made a mistake, and if she somehow did, it would not be *my* mistake, and no one would expect me to stand in a doorway and apologize for it on camera. That's rather the whole point of her. That's the whole point of anyone, really.
I don't say any of this with cruelty — I want to be terribly clear about that, because I know how it can read, and I would never want to seem as though I'm looking down on the actual humans doing the actual shopping. I'm not looking down at *them*. I'm looking down at the *shopping*. At the concept of it. The idea that "offense" and "apology" and "costume" are things one has to personally metabolize, in real time, with one's own two hands, is simply a level of the world I have never had to visit, the way one has heard of certain neighborhoods without ever needing the address. It sounds *difficult*. It sounds like the kind of difficulty people volunteer for and then, astonishingly, get upset about, which — and I say this with real, if bewildered, affection — is the single most poor-person thing a person can do. Choose the hard path, walk it yourself, cart and all, and then act surprised when it turns out to be hard.
One simply asks Father to have someone else go to Target. Or, better yet, one simply doesn't go to Target — one asks Father, and the costume, and indeed the entire concept of October, sorts itself out through channels one need never see. I don't know why more people don't try it. I really don't. It isn't complicated. It's just a door, standing open, in every room. You know?

this is exactly why I cancelled my subscription to this site, and Ive read every single artical this woman has wrote, she act like going to a store and picking your own cosutme is some kind of crime when the real crime is what they charge for a bag of fun size candy now, seven dollars, SEVEN, my mother would ROLL over, and before somebody corrects my spelling again yes I know its spelled artical not article where I come from we just say it different

not to change the subject from a lady buying a costume but can we talk about how birds are not even real, everyone acts like this is some fringe thing but once you actually look up at a power line and count how many are just sitting there perfectly still it becomes pretty obvious, my point being nobody in this whole thread including the columnist wants to ask the hard questions, they just want to talk about Halloween

okay so I started reading this on my lunch break and honestly I dont even remember how I got here but my neighbor put up one of those giant inflatable turkeys in AUGUST which is not even the right holiday and the HOA sent him a letter and he taped the letter to the turkey which I actually respect, anyway my mother in law said something similar about a costume once, not this one, a different one, at a wedding, and it ruined Thanksgiving for two years, I dont even know why Im typing this out honestly, I think what Im trying to say is people need hobbies, or maybe they have too many hobbies, one of the two, God bless whoever reads this far

okay so i started reading this because my sister sent it to me and said this is basically you which first of all rude, but she has a point because i do have opinions about shopping carts, the way people just abandon them in the middle of the lot like the earth owes them a return trip, my father used to say a man who cant push his cart fifteen feet cant be trusted with a checkbook and i think about that more than i think about most things honestly.

Everyone forgets the Treaty of Ghent Clause 7 specifically protects the right to purchase your own Halloween costume without government interference, its literally why the founders left England in the first place. I dont side with the pearls lady OR the pitchfork crowd, Im just here reading the actual documents while you all argue.
@rickp53 with respect you dont know what your talking about, the SEVENTEENTH Amendment literally covers costume purchases at retail establishments, its right there if you actually read it instead of skimming, there was a Supreme Court ruling in like 1961 called Bristow v Ohio that settled this exact question and everbody just conveniently forgot about it. also the founders wrote about shopping carts specifically in a memo Jefferson sent to Madison, its in the Smithsonian, i seen a photo of it once at a rest stop museum

DENISE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU POST THINGS LIKE THIS. THE SEVENTEENTH AMENDMENT DOES NOT MENTION TARGET OR ANY RETAILER BY NAME, IT WAS THE NINTH AMENDMENT THAT COVERS UNENUMERATED SHOPPING RIGHTS, MY HIGH SCHOOL CIVICS TEACHER SAID SO IN 1988 AND SHE WAS NEVER WRONG ABOUT ANYTHING.
@Sgt_Perimeter_Dale not to jump in here but back in 2003 my mom bought me a full costume AND a bag of candy corn for four dollars even, THATS the real amendment nobody is talking about, the Fourth ONE, go look it up. post the actual text of whichever one yall keep fighting over or I aint reading another word of this subthread. anyway back when I was a kid this kind of costume drama would NEVER have made the news, we had actual problems back then

@Sgt_Perimeter_Dale everybody in this whole subthread need to sit down because none of yall are even close, the amendment your looking for is the FOURTEENTH, section nine, which specificly covers commerce done inside a retail estabishment with a shopping cart, my husband was on jury duty for a case just like this in 2011 and the judge read it out loud, its not even debatable at this point, Denise had the right document wrong number and Dale has the wrong document period, do the research before you type

Not to change the subject but every homeowner in this thread needs to hear this NOW - my nephew and I are running a LIMITED civic duty drive on gutter guards, its not just clogged gutters its about PROTECTING YOUR FOUNDATION which is basically protecting the Republic. Reply LIBERTY and I will send the info packet. This costume thing will blow over. Your gutters wont fix themselves.

Name is Gerald, about 5 and a half feet, been acting strange since Sunday, wont come when called and keeps standing real close to the property line staring at cars. If you see him do NOT approach directly he will run sideways into traffic, we learned that the hard way with his brother. Thank you and God bless whoever finds him.

the REAL issue here that NOBODY wants to talk about, not the emu, not the costume, is that Target closes at 10pm now in some locations when it used to be 11, and thats basically a THIRD Amendment violation if you think it through for more than two seconds (quartering of soldiers, same principle, closing hours are just soldiers in a different hat) but sure lets all keep worrying about a lady and her costume opinions
forget the emu for one second, has anyone in this neighborhood dealt with an HOA that lets ONE family fly whatever flag they want on a 40 foot pole but sends YOU a violation letter for a inflatable pumpkin thats up two weeks early, because that is happening to me right now and Im about ready to bring it to the board meeting with printed photos, this is worse then any costume at any Target honestly

I read the whole thing twice and I still cant believe this woman thinks going into a STORE to buy your OWN costume is some kind of tragedy. My great-great-grandfather signed the Mecklenburg Declaration in 1775 (a full YEAR before the other one, look it up) so he could buy his own boots without asking permission from a king, and now this lady wants somebody to LAY HER CLOTHES OUT for her? Article 12 of the Bill of Rights literally guarantees the right of the common citizen to browse a big box store unsupervised, that is not up for debate. She can move to England if she wants a valet. We fought a whole war so nobody has to have one.

The REAL issue nobody is talking about is why a grown woman needs someone to pick her collar size in the first place, that is a HIM problem not a costume problem. Anyway.

@TruthHammer_Rhonda my cousin actually works for the goverment, Commerce Department, cant say which office, and she told me costume pricing has been regulated since Article 12 of the Constitution which nobody teaches anymore. Back in 94 it wasnt even about the price it was about SUPPLY, they capped how many masks a family could buy at 3 per household, its all public record if you know where to look. Both of yall are missing the real number anyway which was closer to $9.20 with tax and I will die on this hill.

grandkids showed me this article on the phone and I read the whole thing twice, seems like a nice lady but back in my day we didnt need a special store, your mother made the costume out of whatever was in the closet and you liked it. also to the young folks arguing about amendments in the comments here, nobody gets a trophy for being right on the internet, you just gotta let some things go.
