Now. The headcount question. Because there is always a headcount question, and the fact that this particular headcount consists of "millions of volunteers" does not exempt it from analysis — it just makes the analysis more interesting, because these people worked for free. Let me say that again with the reverence it deserves: for free. Millions of individuals allowed a research institution to run compute on hardware they personally purchased, using electricity they personally paid for, generating heat in rooms they personally cooled, for two decades, in exchange for nothing but the abstract possibility of being a footnote in a discovery they will not live to see monetized. That is the single most efficient labor arrangement in the recorded history of capitalism, and Berkeley is sitting on it like a man who found a diamond mine and decided to use it as a paperweight.
I don't want to hear about the spirit of scientific inquiry. I want to know why nobody licensed this. Twelve billion signal detections is a dataset. A dataset is an asset. I am questioning the decade. The decade is the cost center. The decade is where I would have sent someone with a red pen.
And what, ultimately, is the hundred? This is where I have to be honest with you, because honesty is the only luxury I permit myself. The hundred is not a finding. The hundred is a shortlist, and a shortlist is worthless until someone prices what's on the other end of it. If even one of those hundred signals resolves into confirmed contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence, I would ask this room to consider, calmly, what that intelligence is sitting on. Resources we haven't priced. Technology we haven't licensed. An entire civilization's worth of intellectual property with no existing framework for royalties, first-contact exclusivity rights, or — and I raise this gently, as a matter of pure downside protection — liability. Twenty-one years and nobody has drafted the term sheet. We may be on the verge of the single largest untapped counterparty in economic history, and the institutional response, so far, has been to file it under "astronomy."
I'll grant that the alternative outcome exists: all hundred signals are noise, satellite interference, a badly shielded microwave in Pasadena, and the search continues. Fine. Even then, I want acknowledgment of what was actually built here, because it wasn't a search for aliens — it was a proof of concept for the single most cost-efficient distributed labor model ever deployed, and everyone is too busy looking up to notice they're standing on top of it. Millions of donated CPU-hours. Zero payroll. Twenty-one years of sustained voluntary output with no attrition problem, no unionization risk, and no severance liability, because nobody was ever employed in the first place — they were just believers, and belief, it turns out, is the only input in this entire economy that has never once demanded a raise.
So here is my bottom line, and it is the only line that has ever been bottom: somewhere in a server room in Berkeley there are one hundred signals nobody has priced, sitting on top of twelve billion data points nobody has licensed, generated by millions of people nobody has paid, over twenty-one years nobody has amortized. That is not a search for intelligent life. That is the most undercapitalized asset in the Northern Hemisphere, and I would like it noted, for the record, that I found it before the aliens did.

unrelated to all this signal business but has anyone else noticed the tornado siren down by the feed store has been going off for NO reason the past two weeks, nothing on the radar, nothing. i really think its doing something to peoples thinking because my whole street has been irritable since it started. also the contrails have been thicker lately, thicker than normal, somebody should be looking into that instead of counting radio blips from a college
